Got a beautiful 8 month Silkie roo free on CraigsList today for my Silkie hens.
Problem is he has a serious case of leg mites. Yes I knew it as soon as I saw him but took him anyway.
Put him by himself in a large dog crate in garage for the night while I researched here.
After 3 hours of reading...
Phew! 2 feet done, 6 more to go. Daisy was an awesome patient!
I am still confused though on what I am seeing.
The scabs came off quite easily with just a very small bit of stuff attached to underside.
I massaged and squeezed and a sort of round pink bubble of skin? was seen in the middle.
I cut...
I think I can I think I can ... after a cocktail and a good smoke ;-) Thank you so much for the detailed reply!
Doubt I will get all 4 done in one day (that would be 8 feet, or 2&3/4 yards, ha! I crack myself up, sorry) but will report back tomorrow evening, possibly with fun pics!

Oh lordy HELP!
I just watched a video of what I think I need to do tomorrow when my husband can help ...
Almost lost my lunch. Okay I can do this if I HAVE to.
Out of 23 chickens all 4 of my Polish girls have the black scab in the centers of BOTH feet. All about 1/4" diameter.
They are not...
Thank you! Just did some research and I think that's it.
No doubt they came about due to all the rain, heat, and high humidity we've been having.
Probably the feed kicked out of the chicks bowls and getting so wet brought them about to feast.
Checked my feed bin with a magnifying glass and phew...
Hmm, then what would they be? A gazillion of them all over my runs in the smashed down wet poop.
They look just like the red mites, round bodied, but even smaller.
I couldn't stand it so went ahead and covered the runs with 5% sevin dust. All is well today with no more 'moving' poop.
Not sure I'm putting this in the right place ...
Have never seen any bugs on my chickens or in the coops. Dusting with DE since day one.
I keep very clean runs and coops with sand in the runs and under roost bars and scoop every day.
We have had a lot of rain lately and the sand in runs is now...
I read on here last summer, when it was so incredibly hot, to try vanilla air freshener hangers. Those cardboard tree thingys that hang in cars. I hung several in my runs and it helped a lot.
They need to be replaced often but are pretty cheap to use during the fly season.
I also sprinkle DE...

When I go to clean up the poop is...
I guess that's the answer(s) I thought I would get. Okay, I am leaving them alone.
One more question for now, do I change the momma's feed out to chick starter as soon as they start hatching?
Thanks
I have 2 Silkies sitting on 19 eggs in the nursery here...

The eggs are from a 4 day period with the first due to hatch tomorrow, Easter!
It is pouring rain now and probably tomorrow...
hahaha! I started my chicks out with a box of sand in the coop to set bowls of food and water on. I no longer do that as I don't feed and water in the coop.
I do have sand trays under the roost bars. Makes for easy peasy clean up.
Thank you and Miss Lydia too!
I will certainly be posting pictures ... surely some of the 19 will hatch. Pretty sure they were all fertilized.
No telling what I will get with such a mixed bag of breeds. This is a first for me.
Thanks again!
Wondering if my post got lost ...
I have 2 silkies brooding on 19 eggs in a separate nursery. They are both in the same dishpan. The eggs are 4 days of all my breeds.
First are due to hatch on Easter.
When/if they hatch do I give them JUST chick starter right away? Will the 2 silkie mom's be...
I read the first 15 pages of this thread and decided to fast forward ...

I am pretty sure I found the point of injury.
See the salad bar ... a few points of the hardware cloth were sticking out at the ends.
One little prick on the foot ...
