I haven't seen anything a chicken wouldn't eat. I thought everything was normal. If chickens are looking puny, losing feathers, they may be molting. I was told that a small amount of styrofoam would help when they are molting. I don't know how, that's just what I was told.
Mine get a good dose...
When the're teenagers, it's kinda funny with their challenges. Getting flogged isn't that big a deal.
A full grown roo is a different story. Especially if you have children. If you do wish to keep an aggressive full grown roo, keep his spurs off. I had one as a teenager and the first thing I...
It helps with the odor to have bedding, as long as yo change it regularly. It also gives the chickens good exercise scratching around in it.
Also, you don't have to take dirt up to get all of the litter out. I prefer to use bedding because of the compost value that is gained with using it...
Just hope the people in the 8 or 9 swing states have the wherewithall to correct this in November! If not, then we are all in the unfortunate position of getting what THEY deserve! :(
I have to deal with a back yard on a slant as well. Very aggravating! My first runs were made using treated 4 x 4 corner posts planted 2 feet dp. I made a rabbit yard using landscape timbers w/roofing tar on the buried end, only 1ft. deep.
I have been thinking about a third and fourth run with...
Anyone noticed a price drop on grocery store eggs? Locally around here various stores are running sales .79 dozen
I think they are feeling the pinch of the backyard chicken craze.
Don't have the pics. , but I made a nice four bay rooster pad for $130.
It is rectangular in shape, four feet high and the individual pens are six by six. The total area is 6 x 24 and totally covered with recycled metal from the local scrap yard. The framing is #2 grade 2"x4"x8' long, $2 each...
I bought some of the chicken water nipples, but never got brave enough to use them. I use a five gallon bucket with lid and two holes drilled in the lower two inches of the bucket. I set this in a plastic dish pan.
It provides water for about three days. It is pretty nasty when I rinse it out...
You could top a small portion immediately outside the building 12x24 with chicken wire and confine them to that, only letting them in the large open area when you are outside.
I have three separate 12x24 runs covered with chicken wire, and only allow free ranging when I am at home. I don't...
I have a pair of hawks nesting within eye sight of my chicken coop and run. I have seen hawks catch doves in mid-air, dive bomb field mice and chase rabbits.
So far, I have not had any hawk/chicken encounters. I do let my chickens free range, and I am currently comfortable enough to allow them...
Short answer: yes.
Chickens are prey animal. They also have a distinct smell. Not only will they attract snakes, but a variety of other varmits/predators. Possums, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, owls, hawks etc........................
However, if you live in an area with ideal snake...
I will take the liberty of quoting scripture since you are fellow believer.................Jesus was teaching some very hard things and most of the crowds dispersed because they couldn't handle it. He then turned to his inner circle, Peter and the gang, and ask them if they were going to leave...
It's frustrating. I have 14 layers and they have slowed some. One day last week I only got 6 eggs! This should be peak season. Daylight hours are right, Temps. are spectatcular. They have plenty of food, fresh water and I free range them 2 hrs. in the evening.
I did get 14 out 14 a couple days...
I relocate when I can. Sometimes it isn't possible due to mixed company, most people think the only good snake is a dead snake. I won't even kill venomous snakes unless they are near a residence.
A few years ago I had to take a huge eastern grey rat snake. He was pushing 6 feet long and as big...
