We actually left them with her until mom herself decided she was done. It was more gradual with her last brood but this time Dory just woke up one day and decided, no more! You'll definitely know when she's done; the chicks continue to try and follow her around and take food from her, but she'll...
Welcome to the site! First of all I'm sorry about your rooster problems, it's disappointing to become attached to a bird and then not be able to keep it. I'm glad you have somewhere you can take them, though. I'm too worry about where my roosters end up. Though I think I might rather them get...
Oh, I'd be very interested in seeing how these little ones turn out! Blue-Laced Red Wyandottes are so gorgeous. Hoping that you get girls out of the hatch! And that those chicks carry their mama's brooding tendency. Our hen Dory just finished taking care of her last brood, much to their...
Has it made any more progress on pipping? If not I would say the chick has likely passed away. If it is continuing to pip, then I'm not completely sure, I've never had a silent hatcher before! Hopefully someone else can give you some more insight.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! So glad that her brood went well! It's amazing how instinctive mothering behavior is to chickens. Watching a hen with her chicks is one of my favorite things in the world.
So how old are the little ones now? Any idea on who was mom and dad for each?
Sorry it took me so long to reply! Haven't been around the forum much lately. As 1muttsfan said, there is a Michigan forum on here, with plenty of advice I think you'll appreciate. :)
As for my own two cents; once again I say Orpingtons. I swear to goodness that's not just me being bias...
When you've got a bully, it doesn't hurt to remove them from the flock for a day or two, usually in another pen or a kennel. It'll knock them down the pecking order and they'll be more submissive when they get added back in- for a little while, at least.
If he's just getting bare though and...
We leave ours with water just in case they get thirsty, or the coop gets hot. :) Originally we left their food outside in the run but it began to attract raccoons, and we didn't want them getting too curious. So now we lock the food in the coop with them.
Welcome to the site! Sounds like you guys have been quite busy already!
Sorry about your losses, hopefully your pup will help to deter predators. There's also the possibility of getting a rooster, if your Americauna turns out to be a hen, though then again, perhaps not since you have such young...
This is funny, because for a long time we had our own little flock or two Easter Eggers, a silver-laced Wyandotte, and a Buff Orpington. They've since been added to the main flock though. :)
Because you're only adding two to two, I think that you would be alright. How old are/will be the two...
Once upon a time, there was a garter snake in the pen that our two goats share with the alpha rooster when he's separated from the girls.
We had no idea about it until we found the flattened remains while cleaning. It appeared to have been pecked to death. It was about six inches long and one...
Sounds just like a broody, with the growling and the feather ruffling. The poop too; broodies take the nastiest poops! I think it's sweet that your "special needs" girl decided she wanted to try being a mom. Whether you want her to be is the question, though, especially since she's somewhat...
Rough that you'll have to be rid of them after this long, but good on your seller for being willing to fix it. The more I look at CottN the more I'd bet actual money that she's a pullet. Also, curious as to what breed Hawk is. Coloring is beautiful! Redd is a roo if I ever saw one, but can't...
Hmm, I just looked at those pics and really think that Cotton and Pebbles look like pullets. Still will need to complain to your seller though about how many roos you ended up with. Guaranteed, huh?
