    is Dumor (dumour) a good feed brand?

    Dumor is all I feed from start to finish, starter, then starter grower, then layer, the ducks were on grower/finisher. my chickens lay better on the dumor vs Purina. Purina is more expensive, and as far as smell i have not noticed any worse than any other chickens / coops.

    Just curious, What is a good egg producing breed?

    I like my red stars, (red sex link) I have white leghorn, rhode island red and Red Stars. I am working my flock around to 100% Red Stars. Friendly, docile chicken that lays large brown eggs and good numbers. my 25 lay approx 20-25 a day.

    Anyone have a mixed flock of bantams and standards?

    i have red stars, leghorns, rhode island, and then a silkie bantam, and they all get a long good, I had a pair of silkie bantams but the rooster passed a month ago. but my silkie bantam(s) get along fine with the big ones. Hope that helps

    What do you keep your oyster shell in?

    I built my own feeder (out of wood) for the food, and put an 8 inch partition on each end, food in the middle (large) section and oyster shells on each end. this hangs on the wall so no spilling and no scratching all on the floor. This has worked well for me.

    thank you for all the replies. the outcome has ben awesome they are laying well, and are happy helathy chickens they get layer now and then scratch as a treat and to "scratch" in on the floor.

    Do chickens have to roost?

    my Rhode Islands and White Leghorns (just over a year old) all roost at night. but my younger Red Star (~3 months) only about half or so roost and my Buff Silkies so not roost at all they are approx. 3 months also.

    I always wash mine off with a damp paper towel, I did not know about the warm/hot vs cold water, i will be using warm/hot from now on. But i guess it sounds like maybe it is not necessary to wash them

    this raises another question if i go to just layer can i do it all at once or do i need to do it slow and work into it.

    That's only bad for them if they aren't getting enough nutrition. I would say that daily egg was a good sign that they were getting what they needed. thanks, i will have to try it for a while and see if it seem to help. maybe it will increase the egg quality again and chicken quality again...

    Why don't you want to give them straight layer. They are layers, are they not? they are leghorns and rhode island reds, I have Red stars i will be adding when they are old enough. I just thought then they would have "blow outs" from laying so many eggs. I was giving them more layer to start...
