    EXTREMELY LOW EGG PRODUCTION

I have 11 hens and used to get 7-9 a day and out of the blue, it dropped to 2-3 a day. I thought it was due to the weather. Good food and more water and still nothing. And one day, almost by accident I found a hen WAY back under the coop with only about 6-7 inch inch clearance After getting...

    Which hen laid this egg?

My personal experience has been very positive with great service after sales. Doesn't matter where you order from, chicks do die during shipping mostly due to weather and shipping delay which no hatchery out there can control.

    Which hen laid this egg?

Yup, I am leaning toward bigger chicken doesn't mean bigger egg idea. Only thing is that I used to think white silkies only laid white eggs but apparently not. :)

    Which hen laid this egg?

Today I found one tiny egg next to usual small white egg I collect from white bantam silkie. I have 5 month of silkie which should lay bigger white egg than small white shown in the photo according to a neighbor who split the silkie with me. Only breed of hens that could lay colored eggs are 9...

Non bearded white silkie gender at ~5 month?

I hope you are right! One of them seems to have such a large comb and waddle compared to the other two. Fingers crossed!

Non bearded white silkie gender at ~5 month?

Seeing those photos of your silkie pullets, I think I might have 2 pullets. The one you said is iffy is the one I thought might be a roo but that one is the sweetest one!

*23* week old silkies all meant to be pullets

After watching 10 non-bearded broiler silkies (which are down to 3 now) grow, they all look like pullets to my untrained eyes~! :)

Non bearded white silkie gender at ~5 month?

My chicken experience is limited to 2 bearded silkies hens so far. So to me, large comb and waddle equal likely roo is engraved in my head. The breed of silkie I got appears to be non bearded slike broilers. I could see obvious comb and waddle early as 7-8 weeks on some which I gave away. A few...

Does anybody grow NON-bearded broiler silkie hens???

I am in USA. I bought "bantam silkies" from JM hatchery but those grew like crazy fast compared to 2 silkies bought 3 1/2 years ago locally. So I googled and googled and there were LF silkies which are mainly found in Europe unlike USA where 95% of the silkies are bantams according to google...

Does anybody grow NON-bearded broiler silkie hens???

"Pullets of any breed develop larger combs and wattles when they get close to egg-laying age, so at this age you might have females that are preparing to lay soon." If that is the case, two silkies that seem to follow and hang around with Ari could be pullets. I could settle for 2 out of 10 at...

Does anybody grow NON-bearded broiler silkie hens???

If so, would you kindly post a few photos of showing waddle/comb? I tried to google but 99.9% of the photos are that of fluffy bearded silkies. I have heard that non bearded silkie hens have prominent waddles compared to bearded silkie hens. Out of 10 sr silkie chicks, I got rid 7 silkies due...

    Bearded vs nb silkie question

Yup, that was my conclusion as well after more googling. The broiler silkies! Didn't even know there was such till I stumbled upon broiler silkie description from purelypoultry. One thing I noticed was very prominent waddle development even around 8 weeks. I got one that is 4 month which I...

How and when to add new chick/chickens to existing 4 hens (1 3.5 year, 3 3month)

Thanks for the input. The green house is covered completely with the roof of the house and has multiple windows for ventilation. Also got outdoor ceiling fan right over it for added air circulation during summer. I would say it is relatively local predator proof which includes skunk, possum...

How and when to add new chick/chickens to existing 4 hens (1 3.5 year, 3 3month)

I am planning to house them together in the green house coop eventually. The 2x6 coop was by itself when I had 2 hens only. With new hens, the older coop was put inside the 12x6 green house which is acting as a new coop for them. During the day time, they have access to backyard where they get...

How and when to add new chick/chickens to existing 4 hens (1 3.5 year, 3 3month)

I had 2 white silkie hens. One of them died to a predator. So one hen named Ari lived my itself for about 2 years. We added 8 2 month silkies eventually and she kind of did things herself mostly. We gave away 2, then 3 more silkies that appeared to be roos. Ari seems to be getting along pretty...

    Giant Silkie Project.

If you want to get LF silkies or "giant" bantam silkies, you can try JM hatchery. I ordered 15 supposedly bantam silkies from them last Nov and in 3 month, they were noticeably bigger and stronger than my 3 1/2 year old silkie. They were growing like bantam silkies on steroid. These could be...

    Bearded vs nb silkie question

I have been reading silkie related threads and most of them deal with just sexing silkies or color genetics. Only bearded vs nb threads I could find talked about imperfect dominance of bearded. Nothing related to the possible difference in growth rate between them. One other thing I found...

    Bearded vs nb silkie question

So far I only grew 2 bearded white silkie hens so don't know much about silkie other than basice info. About a couple months ago, I ordered bantam silkie chicks (supposedly 90+% will be bearded) from JM Hatchery which seems to be smaller hatchery concentrating on fewer breeds. So 8 1/2 weeks...
