Help! Recent freeze has left 6 of my chickens Lame-Can't walk!

Well, its definitely not botulism because I buy food weekly and they go through a fresh bag every 2-3 days. I checked the bags that I just bought and they seem to be ok. They have also been vaccinated for Marek's, so that is not the culprit either. I will try the vitamin D supplements. They are...

Help! Recent freeze has left 6 of my chickens Lame-Can't walk!

First and foremost thank you all for your help. The last two days we have experienced a cold snap with temps at night easily falling to 30 deg. This morning I woke up and found 6 of my chickens (large breeds, 2 roosters and 4 hens all around 8-10 months old) lying on the ground. When I went to...

Northern California Meet Up/Chicken Swap - Sunday October 10th!

Quote: Great, I can start saving 'em up now! I know there are some in the coop at the moment, I'll go grab them and put them somewhere safe! And I wouldn't charge much for them, maybe $10-15 depending on how many eggs I get before then? Hopefully around a dozen by Saturday if we're lucky. My...

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ruth, that doesn't make sense to me either. With eggs there are significantly increased risks to obtaining viable birds. One would think that the value of hatching eggs would be lower to compensate for those additional risks.

Yes that is true. Unfortunately Greenfire has a monopoly on Bev's marans though.

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hey, I have a question for you guys. Do chicks that hatch out mossy ever molt out to look normal, or do they always stay mossy through adulthood? I know that white feathers can molt out but how about the moss?

Ah ok. Thank you for his contact information. I think that it is a shame that SOP barred rocks are very hard to find.

    Plymouth Rock thread!

Kath, Are you going to sell any of your barred rock eggs? If so I would love to be placed on your list. I am dying to start a line of beautiful (non hatchery) barred rocks. Quote:

My 5 week old marans roo is testing out his crow for the first time. It sounds terrible! Poor little guy. I hope he takes lessons from the older roo's across the yard!

Trader Joes & Other Grocery Store Egg Hatching Club - Are you a Member

My grocery store brown eggs $2.48/doz (from Rock Island brand eggs) ended up hatching out chicks that looked like California Leghorns (white with occational black spots). I called the egg producer, petaluma farms, and apparently they use white leghorn roosters with their flocks of production...

October Hatching ... How many are in? I'm due to hatch on 10/17

My seramas are due to hatch on 10/13. I did an early candle and saw some life in about 70% of the eggs. I will give them another week before I pull the infertile eggs out.

Forgive me, BYCers, for I have sinned......

I have to agree with urbanfarmerkc. The more batches you hatch the less you want to fiddle with everything. I checked on my first batch of eggs 3-4 times a day and now I am down to only once a day. A reliable incubator helps too. When I was using my LG I was constantly worried about temp spikes...
