I had a cross beak that did very well. I didn't do anything special for him, because I feed FF to all and he had no trouble eating it. We had a dog attack that got him.

Generally, when first hatched, baby chicks need to be kept at 95 degrees and decrease the temperature by 5 degrees per week.

If it started suddenly, something may have scared him or caused him to become defensive. I have had good results by confining them for a while and picking them up often and he only gets to eat when you are touching him. You can generally get ahold on them at night best.

I did a lot of research before getting my Buckeyes. So just my personal humble opinion I would rate the quality of current lines:
1) Shumaker
2) Lay
3) McCary
My Buckeyes are Lay line. Which is the one line that I know of bred for SOP and for production.
