My RR developed a soft, fluid-filled swelling underneath and between her legs. The feathers were coming out, and she huddled in the corner most of the time. After bathing the area, I tried to see if she was eggbound, but felt no hardness. I read I would have felt the egg. Is that right? I...
The eggs were cool, so I gathered them. I don't really need more chickens, but would like the experience of hatching some chicks! These nests are right next to each other, and another hen had been on the one she moved to. Strange, these birds, but so much fun! I love my fresh eggs!
Goldie sat for over two weeks on a clutch of 5 eggs, then left them and moved to a new nest. I haven't looked to see what is under her now. What gives?
My BO's are not laying either. They were born in the spring, but I don't have the actual date. Maybe eggs are not far off. I didn't know they are later than other breeds. BYC has answers for everything!
My handyman used tin or I think they call it flashing all around the coop and run. That might keep your gravel and sand in place better than hardware cloth, but the water wouldn't flow through as easily. Frustrating! I know how drainage problems can be impossible to solve sometimes. Just a...
After losing my flock to the neighbors dogs, I had my coop and run secured with tin all around, and hardware cloth on the door. (The dogs chewed through the wooden lattice to get in.) I now have two Buff Orps, and two Ameraucanas. Still shopping for a roo. Can't decide if I want to replace my...
I got wingclipping info from BYC. It worked for me with one hen. Unfortunately, not for another that insisted on roosting in a tree. She was hawk/owl dinner one night. She started roosting on the coop roof, and I would go out and scoop her up with a fish net. Then she went higher, and I...
I am so sorry for your loss. As I just lost all mine, I really appreciated these suggestions. I am going to improve my coop and chicken yard before I get another flock. I never thought of the electric wire. I have one I used for a dog years ago. I will be dusting it off!
Update-I lost my boy Blanco this morning. So sad. He was a great protector of his flock, and a great pet. He would come and dance around my feet asking to be picked up. I will miss him. Thanks to all who showed interest, and to threehorses for the advice. Good to have, bad to have to use.
Thanks SallyF. Yes, his beak is damaged and I am using a syringe to keep him hydrated. Judging from your experience, I am only prolonging the inevetable....
My boy, Blanco seems to be a little stronger, but I am afraid to get my hopes up just yet. My neighbor appologized over and over, for the dogs getting loose. (She is putting them down) Also offered to buy me new chickens. They also mauled one of my month-old Boer kids. She is OK, but is...
My wounded boy, Blanco, is hanging in there. I am about to try the wound-treating measures, starting with the peroxide cleansing.
His injuries seem to be confined to the neck and head area. I will keep you posted. Thanks for all the support.
I lost all four of my hens to a predator, probably my neighbors dogs. My beautiful white silkie rooster fought for all their lives. He is bloodied, but alive. Can I bathe him to examine for wounds? The vet said get him out of the heat, and give him some water. Any other advice? He is my...
My little Henny Penny hatched a chick! After three tries, usually not on her own eggs, success! She is in the coop with the others.
Do I move her to a separate cage? Do I move the unhatched eggs with her? What excitement!!!
