Our RIR has apparently made a secret hiding spot and has been laying her eggs there for at least two weeks! We just discovered it and there are 17 eggs!!! How can I determine if the eggs are ok to eat? Any ideas? Thanks!
I case anyone is wondering, I just went and checked and they were all soft and dry (on top and underneath their feathers. They were mainly annoyed that I woke them up. We have 7 hens and love them so much! In 12 hrs today we got 18" of snow, 40 mph winds, and 4 eggs! Amazing.
We just got slammed with a not-really-predicted blizzard in Denver. We got about 14" in about 12 hours and winds blowing up to 40mph. Our poor girls are soaking wet. They have their coop, but I am worried about night falling and them getting too cold. It's only only supposed to get down to...
Thank you! She did lay again, but most of her eggs are very large and have two yolks! Kinda crazy, no? I'm so new to this, even just getting any eggs at all is exciting/new/crazy to me. :)
Our BO started laying last week and suddenly stopped. We keep finding her nesting and making strange noises, but no eggs! Should I be worried? What should I look for if this is abnormal?
I didn't even know there was a "lavender" color and that's what I named her!! Awesome. My best pics are below, she doesn't seem to have speckles that I can see. She is really quick and doesn't love to be held so hard to photograph.
I'm brand new to chickens and was really excited about getting a Cochin for our flock. I've been reading all about them and love their looks.
We named our little chick Lavender and looking at all the variations of Cochin, I'm wondering what color you think she will be? I am thinking she looks...
Hopefully this is a good place to post this.
In the next month or so (maybe 6 weeks) we are going to need our coop. We have 7 chicks now and with a one year old daughter and full time jobs, our dreams of building our coop are clearly becoming out of reach.
We have looked at Wardle, found...

Yay!! Awesome tips and so appreciated. Looks like I will be running to the store tomorrow to give this a try. :) Glad Press N Seal is usually only a holiday extravagance ar our house. LOL
OMG Glad press n seal!!! What a smart idea. And thank goodness for your disclaimer because I totally would have tried from the outside and had some sticky and angry girls on my hands. Hahahahahaha. Duh!
I'm a brand new Denver member! I now have a brood of 7 chicks and preparing to find the perfect coop for them soon! Any other Denver people here?
Our chicks are 7 and 5 weeks old. Loving this so far!!
I just wanted to share our new bigger brooder for our growing girls! I just about broke myself wrangling this gigantic dog crate into our tiny basement bathroom but it paid off.
The girls seem so happy with lots of room to scratch and flap about. All of their pine shavings are ending up all...
We have a brood of 7 chicks. The first 3 are one week older than the other four. They are now 3 and 2 weeks old, respectively. It seems like there is a huge growth spurt between 2 and 3 weeks, and our 3 week olds are WAY bigger than the 2 week olds. The biggest of all is our light Brahma...
