How do I know if this is a bantam??

How can I tell which of those breeds she is!? I'm surprised I got her at a farm supply store--aren't these breeds fairly uncommon? Here she is today (my shoe is a women's 7)

How do I know if this is a bantam??

I got three chicks from our local farm supply back in the first week of April. Two of the three ended up being roos and had to be re-homed because we live in a neighborhood with RCs :( Anyway, the one remaining pullet is lonely and I have been searching for friends for her that are about the...

    Sweet boy needs home :(

My three daughters each picked out chicks about 2 months ago. My youngest daughter's chick cocka-doodled today, and we cannot have roos in our neighborhood. She is crushed (she's only 4) and I really want to find a good home for him. He's really sweet, fully feathered and outdoors. We are in...

    My Playhouse Coop is DONE!

I would appreciate any tips or suggestions, as this is my first coop and first time having my girls outside! I'm still bringing them in at night, just because I can't let them go ;) Last night, I was late in getting them in, and they were huddled in the corner on the ground in the sand :((...

    My Playhouse Coop is DONE!

I finally finished repurposing my daughters' playhouse, and I'm pretty happy with it! Here are some pics. . . I built both ladders and I've subsequently filled the entire ground inside the house with sand. I also added another 1" x 2" to the side of the perch that they are pictured...

What type of sand to use in my coop

I just got Step 2 masonry sand. It looks like playground sand, but perhaps a bit larger grained. I didn't really know what to get either, but the Step 1 masonry sand was more like clay, and the playground sand was dyed. So, I just got the only other option at Lowe's :)

    Chicken Feed/Treat Cheat Sheet??

LOL! That's funny--I think my kids jacked up on chocolate cake is enough for me! Chickens too, and I may run away Compost inside the run *is* a great idea. My run will not be big enough. Perhaps I will find a planter to use as a composter, and put that in the corner of their run.

If using sand, what should I put under that?

I'm trying to figure out where to place my coop. The best place seems to be under some trees in a mulched area (old mulch/dirt, not fresh mulch). I'd like to use sand is my litter, but I'm wondering what I should put under that inside the coop? If you scoop/stir it up, wouldn't it just get mixed...

    Hanging coco baskets for nests??

jetdog: I will probably have a few inches of base material (sand) in the floor once I put it outside, plus I haven't put in the roosts yet. I was planning on putting one across, right along the front edge of the nests, to both support them more and so they can reach. You cannot see it in the...

    Hanging coco baskets for nests??

Has anyone ever used them? Do hens like them?? I was searching for a low-cost alternative to building something from scratch. I got two, but I may see how my 3 babes do with just this one for now!

Feed Waste & Keeping water clean with chicks - Solutions?

I found this one on Amazon that's open in the top, so you wouldn't have to do the whole refill-jar-fill-feeder-bottom-get-ready-and-smash-together-hoping-it-all-comes-together-without-dumping magic show! And you can hang it...

Feed Waste & Keeping water clean with chicks - Solutions?

I noticed the same problem with my new chicks! First off, they naturally "scratch" the ground for food, so all of that feed that they've spilled out will eventually get eaten. Also, I chose to purchase a metal feeder like yours--plastics are more susceptible to bacterial growth (I know this just...

    Chicken Feed/Treat Cheat Sheet??

I am new to chicks and have been reading through many of the posts on feeding and treat options. Is there a master cheat sheet or list here somewhere so I can keep it all together!? If not, maybe we could start one (not sure if that would be like a Google doc or a pinned thread by the admin, or...

    Nipple Watering?

I'm very new to chicken keeping--my first three aren't even outside yet! These are great ideas. It seems to me like that system on eBay is an automatic fill system--maybe it's more complex than just sticking a bucket on PVC? My question is: how long does it take for them to figure out how to...

Please Share! Tips for keeping your neighbors happy (or clueless)?

Odelia, yes, in my introduction I state that I'm thinking it is a he! They were all supposed to be hens, but you know how that goes. I've already been calling it "boy" and "him" ;) I am a newbie, but even I can sense it's not a girl. And I have an experienced farmer friend who keeps telling me...

Please Share! Tips for keeping your neighbors happy (or clueless)?

...outside--they'll attract coyotes!' So, who knows what they actually think. They have two boys, 6 and 10, as well as a yippee chihuahua dog they *just* got an electric fence for (before that, the loud little thing would run over to our yard). I was thinking about sending an email (so I...

    New! Hi :)

...says: So, we may or may not be okay I'm also not sure if it matters that we are technically in the county and outside the city limits (*just*--some parts of our neighborhood are in it, some are not). But I would think that county would be more lenient on fowl. We have an acre lot and...

    New! Hi :)

I haven't had a chance to add my intro, so here it is! I am a mom of 3 girls and 4 cats (3 indoors, 1 out). We live in North Carolina, in a suburban neighborhood with an HOA (more posts on that later ). I acquired 3 baby chicks at our local Southern States a few weeks ago--each of my girls...
