Nipple Watering?

I used 1" pvc, but when I redo the system, I will be using 2"...I found through experimenting with the drill, 2" pipe is easier. Other than that, it is just a pipe with the nipples in place connected to a bucket. The end cap is for draining it in the winter. If you do connect it to a hose for a constant supply, you will have to reduce the pressure with a pressure reducer, or they will leak.

That's an awesome system. Definitely great for non freezing temps. Have you got a plan for when it does freeze?

I'm very new to chicken keeping--my first three aren't even outside yet! These are great ideas. It seems to me like that system on eBay is an automatic fill system--maybe it's more complex than just sticking a bucket on PVC?

My question is: how long does it take for them to figure out how to get water out of the nipples? I'm assuming the "nipples" are much like the attachment you can put on your spigot for dogs? Mine seem to enjoy dipping their beaks into their waterer and tilting back their heads (ADORABLE!) I'd be worried about them not drinking enough. Any schooling for me on this!?

I cheated a little and started my chicks on both a mason jar waterer and a rabbit waterer. They took right to the pecking of the rabbit waterer and transitioned over to the nipples with ease

You could always leave their normal waterer for them to use while they explore using the nipples.

I can't wait to get the nipple thing going. I'm so tired of clean in bedding out of there waterers. Plus the ducks pooping in the darn things. Goofy birds!

I will be using a bird bath heater and HDPE pipe (it's pvc, just thinner and a lot easier to connect the nipples). Most likely I will be spending most of the summer getting ready for winter lol
