    Help! Egg eating broody hens

Thanks so much for the input. We have a wire dog kennel. Can I put both broodies in there together? Will the third get lonely in the tractor alone? I guess if they can see each other they'll be ok right? Does it have to be off the ground? It seems like it would hurt their feet. I need to put a...

    Help! Egg eating broody hens

I have three hens (did you guess that already?) and two of them have been broody for about two weeks which means one egg a day for us. The two girls sit on top of each other in the nesting box all day and night. I move them off about twice a day despite being pecked and fluffed at. Yesterday...

    I don't want broody, right?

Yes, I thought that was ok. We only have three chickens. You think we need another one?

    I don't want broody, right?

I'm already having chicken dreams, nightmares really, of not getting eggs, chasing them around trying to catch them when they fly the coop, and certainly tonight of one weird bird staring at me while hunkered down in the nest box that the other two need to use. And, someone just gave me a pair...

    I don't want broody, right?

So, if she' separated, how do you know when she's "broken"?

    I don't want broody, right?

I don't have a rooster so there's no reason why my hen should have stayed in the one nesting box all day long right? Now what do I do? I lifted her off and tried to put her on the roost but she wouldn't take it and just sat on the floor. I took the three eggs she was on and the golf ball away...

    Golf ball questions

Thanks for the quick replies! I do have a lip, I nailed a piece of 2x2 in the front of the box but that ball is making it over it and back. I'll make it higher. Do you think the chickens feel unsafe when their eggs disappear from the nesting box, like that's not the best place to lay? That's why...

    Golf ball questions

I forgot to ask: How long does it take to lay an egg? I mean from when the chicken sits in the box until she's done? Anyone waited it out?

    Golf ball questions

I put a golf ball in the nesting box that our three chickens share, well, are supposed to share. Only one has been laying until yesterday when we got two eggs, one in the box, the other in the run. The golf ball was in the run last week which seemed curious. Today, I saw the one who I think...

    Chicken AWOL!! Help!

Well, I was moving the chicken tractor by myself because I'm stubborn and thought I could and lifted it too high and my three hens got out. Pullets, I guess, since they haven't laid an egg at 30 weeks or so but that's beside the point. Anyway, thought they'd go back to roost so left them alone...

Keeping feed dry in the run?

I'm having the same problem. I put a plastic plant dish over top of the feeder but it didn't work. I may try squeezing the feeder into the coop part of the tractor for a few days while we go out of town to be sure they have dry food. We'll see what happens. I could take out the nesting box and...

    basic chicken tractor questions

Thanks for the help ya'll! I hung a feeder in there this morning and will lay off of the kitchen scraps for a little while. Thanks for the fly info Pat. I did read that somewhere about finding the fly balance and I think you're right, it probably is the poo. I can just hear them which is weird...

    basic chicken tractor questions

I'm new to this chicken thing-only a few weeks into it. We built a chicken tractor with a 4x3 house and a 4x9 run, 3 feet tall. We have three white leghorn/RIR mixes who are almost 22 weeks. They are flighty and nervous but seem happy otherwise. They aren't laying yet, which is frustrating but I...

    chicken poo in the water...

Well, I moved the waterer up a couple of inches (on top of an overturned short pot) b/c I was emptying it out constantly o f dirt/debris. Now that it's higher, one stands on top of it and poops right in the water. How do I stop her from getting up there? I can't hang it b/c the handle broke and...

    21 weeks and no eggs...

thanks for all the input! We are feeding layer crumble and lots of kitchen/garden scraps. They are flighty, nervous birds. I'm not sure I could pick one of them up to inspect for mites. Maybe I'll just leave them alone and let them settle down after I mess with the nesting box a bit

    21 weeks and no eggs...

We have three 21 week old (on Thurs) white leghorn/rhode island red crosses. They've been with us for about two weeks in our chicken tractor. We've never had chickens before! They aren't laying at all and kick the straw out of the nesting box. I thought leghorns were early layers. The box is...
