I am mommy to a beautiful eight year old son and wife to a very understanding husband. We live out in the middle of the country on 20 + acres of land with our chickens, ducks, goose, gunieas. rabbits, dogs, a few squirrels we have raised and released and cats! My son was diagnosed in 2004 with a...
I know I have written on this board before but I am going to again! I am about 2 hours away from Greenville, SC. I live a few miles out of Westminster, SC.
My duck eggs that I have hatched successfully have had a humidity of around 50%. I have had great luck with this humidity level. Ducks are so cute when they come out of the egg! I have taken to hatching more duck eggs than chicken eggs now lol.
Blue eggs are usually very hard to candle. My suggestion would be to get the room absolutely dark and get a 100 watt bulb, put it on a lamp with no shade and cover it with a box with a small hole in the bottom and make sure the only light you see is coming through that hole. Put the egg over the...
I have used Tylan 50 before for a sick roo and hen. The rule of thumb I go by is not to eat the eggs for at least 4 weeks. If you eat an egg while a chicken is being treated with Tylan 50, I really don't know what would happen. Maybe someone else will chime in??
I love my Golden Sebright and Silver Sebright. Currently I am breeding the two because my little SS hen died so the hen I have now is a golden with a Silver Roo. I absolutely adore them. I set one egg only so far and it hatched out the sweetest little silver baby you have ever seen. My Golden...
My 2 year old rooster decided a few days ago that he doesn't care for me. He flew at me and tried spur me and my DH called the livestock store we got him from and the man there who I trust completely told us we could take his spurs off by twisting them off. We couldn't get them to twist off so...
My little game hen just started laying again after raising her guinea keet she hatched out for me. She has now started laying HUGE eggs, they are even bigger than my Buff Orps eggs and has even layed two a day. I actually had a duck lay 6 eggs in one day a while back. Don't ya know that hurt!!!
I don't want to jump in here and mess up the conversation but did want to mention that I have a roo that has been sneezing for about 2 weeks. He sneezes and sometimes is gaping, though not as much now. I have been giving him vitamins and electrolytes and apple cider vinegar. He looked perfectly...
For the Poly-Vi-Sol put small drops on the side of her beak and see if she will take it in that way. If not, put one drop at a time on the tip of her tongue, DO NOT drop it directly down her throat as chickens can aspirate easily. As for the selenium I have no idea. I would try the vitamins for...
I guess it is possible that somehow I missed it in the nest box. I thought I did a very good job at changing out the nesting material the other day, guess not! Thanks so much for the input!
I had this happen to one of my ducks. Coon got a hold of her and tried to pull her through the chain link of her run. Tore all the skin off the top of her head and down the side of her face. It looked really bad and I just kept it clean and the skin and feathers grew back. It took a month of so...
My Jersey Giants are about 20 weeks old and are still not laying. They don't even act like they are ready, the roos aren't practicing mounting the hens nor the hen preping to lay. I figure probably I am looking at around 25 weeks or more for them to lay and the roos to get interested!
I went out today to get my every other day egg from my Golden Sebright hen and today there were two in her nest. I brought them inside kind of stunned about finding two eggs in one day in her nest and was going to put them in the incubator but one was pretty icky looking. Looked as though it had...
