    Molting and impacted crop connected?

Just a quick update on my problem Sussex hen - the baseball sized hard lump is gone. I gave up and decided to let nature take it's course and just left her with her flock. I gave no further special attention, but noticed that the lump seemed smaller each day. As of yesterday she seems to have a...

    Molting and impacted crop connected?

Thanks. Only the molting ones are developing the hard lumps and only the one Sussex is having a problem right now. I'm irrigating her with clean water (which she hates) and doing the crop massage every couple of hours. Seems to be getting smaller, but very slowly.

    Molting and impacted crop connected?

They get pellets (Dumor Layer feed or Purina Layena) and are out to forage for an hour or so per day. The rest of the time they are in their 15x30 foot run and I give them a handful of scratch (to get them in). They've had watermelon and pumpkin a few times too

    Molting and impacted crop connected?

I have a dozen hens raised from day-olds that are now 18 months old. About a month ago one of my EEs started a heavy molt and as her new feathers came in she became very lethargic. I found a large hard tennis ball sized lump in her crop that didn't go away overnight. I treated her by isolating...

    New coop question

I painted 3 of the interior walls with a semi-gloss latex paint and used a single 4x8 panel of smooth Fiberglass Reinforced Board (cut to size) behind the roosts. I anchored the FRB to furring strips with flat aluminum stock to avoid adhesive fumes in the coop and sanded all exposed edges with...

    Which breed laid which egg???

I have an EE that lays pearl white eggs. She used to lay light blue, but a few months in she changed to a very white pearl color.

    EE

I got EEs for the first time last March. This summer when they started laying one gave large green eggs and the other gave smaller light blue eggs. The larger EE started a molt in late October and hasn't started laying again yet, but the smaller one's eggs turned to a pearl white and lost all...

    Who laid the first egg?!!!

I have a couple of Australorps and a Barred Rock (and a few other breeds too). I can't tell the difference between my BR's and my BA's eggs unless I catch them laying. The Rock lays first thing every morning before I go to work. The Australorps always choose a separate nestbox from the other...

Had our first coyote incident last night.

Coyotes will probe for an opening and eventually dig if they don't find one. Better to get rid of him especially if you have an eight and three year old that play outside. I've taken coyotes at 50-75 yards with a .22 rifle. You have to place your shot but it will definitely do the job.

    BEST roosts ??

I moved my girls out to the coop when they were about 7 weeks old. I gave them both 2x4 and 2x3 wide side up roosts at the same height and swapped locations every few days to see which ones they used. They overwhelmingly preferred the 2x3s and in fact didn't use the 2x4s at all, but now that...

    Will my flock eventually integrate?

No. I have 2 Black Australorps, 2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Easter Eggers, 1 Barred Rock and 3 Buff Orpingtons. Things have calmed considerably since they were first introduced, but for the most part it's like one large flock and one mini flock consisting of the two newer BOs. Incidentally, the Buff...

    Will my flock eventually integrate?

Thanks CT, I guess I thought that it would be a little smoother with them all being the same age. Seems even somewhat young chickens take their pecking order very seriously. Fortunately, the new ones are sensible enough to avoid the main flock at the feeders and waterers. they just wait their...

    Will my flock eventually integrate?

I have ten eleven week old chicks. I got eight of them as day old chicks and then added two more Buff Orpingtons from the same hatch at nine and a half weeks. I expected the newbies to shake up the pecking order a bit, but although they all do roost together the new BOs are constantly harassed...

Sorry, you don't have the required permissions to download attachments. More information about this

I've been reading BYC since I decided to raise chickens again last fall (my family raised bantams in the 60s). I too joined to access the treadle feeder plans and I understand that many times sites require contributions in the form of posts to access certain features, but this thread is almost 6...
