Does this sound like Marek's disease??

Hi. I'm trying to determine what's wrong with my Australorp. She's a little over a year old. A little history of my flock: I got four chicks from the same person in March of 2015. One, a Silkie, was full-grown and the other three were 8-10 weeks old. About 6 months ago, my Silkie stopped...

Respiratory illness? Gaping, lethargic, losing weight, not cooing

She died in my lap this morning. I'm so sad. At least she didn't struggle but she was so weak she could not stand or keep her eyes open. She died as I was calling the vet to try and get her in. I don't think they could have helped her though and she was way too far gone.

Respiratory illness? Gaping, lethargic, losing weight, not cooing

My precious silkie has been gaping for 3 days. I swabbed her throat for gapeworm but saw nothing. She won't make her usual cooing noises but I can hear slight squeaky sounds when she breathes. She also has diarrhea and is losing weight. Her gait is slow and wobbly--just no energy. I put a...

    people with house chickens

Today, my Silkie and I are hanging out while I work in the dining room. I bathed her and put a diaper on her (for the first time). My dogs and cat don't mind, but my husband does. She'll have to go back out once he gets home. But for now...

Bathed my Silkie today and tried out a chicken diaper

Today I bathed my black Silkie, Luna, and put her polka dot diaper on her so she could sit in my lap while I work. Hopefully she'll get comfortable and fall asleep. Right now, she's just making her little peep noises. It took us a little while to figure out the diaper but I think it's on now...

    Noisy Chicken Advice Please

My experience also. Mine are noisiest around "laying time" which occurs mid-late morning in my little flock. In the afternoon, they're totally quiet.

    Noisy Chicken Advice Please

Haha. Mine are little noisemakers, too...except for the Silkie, who just makes tiny peep noises. I just hope the neighbours don't get mad at me. Maybe I should share some eggs to keep the goodwill?

Which chicken breeds are the most quiet and nice?

My EE is constantly "talking" her head off! All day, she makes noises no matter what's going on. She gets loudest when she finds herself separated from the other girls. In other words, she is NOT QUIET. I don't know if it's because she's an EE, though, or if it's just "her personality". My...

    Laying noises.?

That's hilarious. My neighbor who is unfamiliar with chicken asked me if it was "the dog" making that noise. I had to tell her that "no"...it's the chickens that do that before and after they lay an egg. She responded with, "That's so funny!" but I'm not sure if she meant "funny-cute" or...

    Noise ordinances? Egg songs?

Good advice. Mine have been particularly noisy in the morning (egg-laying time) and I don't want my neighbors to get upset. I just hope they won't see a treat as a "reward" for crowing and making a ruckus!

Barred Rocks!!!!!!!!! Why are they so mean?

My barred rocks have always been sweet. My current BR hen is the "alpha" in the flock but she only picks on the Silkie, not the others.

My hen is crowing! What the heck?

That bird looks just like my Barred Rock hen! I had a hen that crowed once. She was dominant and we mostly just thought it was funny.

    What are Your Chickens Named?

Love the Harry Potter references. I would love to have a rooster just so I could name him Voldemort. Mine are named: Luna (like Lovegood), Pickles, Rosie and Oreo.

breast feathers look really wore and broken! how can i help new growth!

I have a Silkie who had some of her feathers plucked/picked out by another mean chicken (who I gave away!). I've been adding a little poultry vitamin powder to their water, plus they get treats of yogurt, a little leftover meat and/or egg and vegetable scraps in addition to their crumbles. Her...

    Silkies and foraging...

I only have one Silkie but the only place she "forages" is in her bowl of crumbles and that's only when she accidentally steps in it and spills it! She's not the smartest chicken in the world, but she is the cuddliest, so all is forgiven.

How to teach the chickens to go in the coop at night?

I have this issue with my Silkie. My other three, who are only 11 weeks old, have figured it out and go into the coop on their own by 7:30 each evening. The silkie, however, just settles down in the run. I'd let her stay there, but our run isn't built to keep out serious predators like...

    Spa day for my Silkie

My black Silkie, Luna, has had a rough couple of days (recovering from Cocci treatment, getting pecked on head) so I decided it would be good for her to have a spa day. I let her sit in a warm Epsom salt bath with a drop of lavender and geranium essential oil. She sat down in it and looked...

Drama in the coop--had to re-home a pullet

Well, I learned my lesson. A couple of weeks ago, I started a new flock with four pullets--a 6 month old Silkie and three 10 week old pullets (EE, BR & Australorp). I got greedy and decided to add just one more from another seller--a beautiful 7 month old Ameracauna. I just couldn't resist...

Need some advice on "pecking order"

I used "time out" for my Easter Egger yesterday. She was chasing the 10 week old pullets away from their food and water (she's 7 months old) and pecking my Silkie on the head. Even though I got them around the same time (the EE was added 2 days after the others), she's by far the biggest so...
