We have turkey, and chicken dinners enough, and once the carcass has been carved, we drop the rest in a pot of water to make a nice Turkey or Chicken noodle soup. When we dip the bones, and all that out, invariably there is still some meat left behind in the pile of scrap that we aren't going...

I'll have to go find some pics and see how it is done. And we aren't going for the eggs... we are looking to hatch them out and keep a couple hens to poke eggs under. Rumor has it they are broody as all heck. We have Harlequins for eggs, and Cayugas for eggs/meat.

Hehehe... yeah, we are in our blessed summer (all four months of it). My wonder is how they would do all cooped up for the 6 to 8 months of winter we have here in Alaska... would they be too miserable being inside for that long? Still, the wife informs me that the eggs are a go... as...
The wife is thinking of getting a half dozen eggs as we have found a fairly good deal on them. I am only really concerned about their little faces and the freezing weather. We have a really good, well insulated chicken coop, but I am wondering if they are going to have issues in being inside...
I was very happy as 6 of the 9 Harlequin eggs are go for launch... we got very strong veins across them and they looked great! out of the 12 Cauga eggs though, there was some sadness... we have 3 we were unsure of, one had broke early on, and the other 8 were unfertile. Sad, but I am going to...

Welsh Harlequin on the very left.
2 White Pekins in the middle.
And on the right is a Black Swedish.
hmm, I was thinking a Harlequin as well, but the eye color is wrong. Do you know if Harleys have chestnut eyes, none of our previous have, but we only have had 4... sooo... lol

Yes, the hen in hte background in one of my juvenile Cayugas. She has taken up the surrogate mommy role.
We named our little swede Daffy, and we are pretty sure on the two pekins... the other yellow I am not sure one.
there are some pet store antibiotics you can get, but I would at least call a Vet and see what they say. They may be able to give you a little better idea what your little guy has.

Have to agree with you on the watering issues Mandelyn. We have been having a few issues, but no matter how many water systems we put in the ducks seem to swarm all of them. Our chicks seem to be doing good so far though, the real problem is a water dish inside their house as we have...
So, does anyone have any ideas about our little yellow breasted buddy? Still wondering here... been looking on line and I cant find any pics that don't have the stripe on the side of the head.

There are some breeds that do, but ducks are more notorious for stopping in the middle of the winter, so quoth the wife. I remember hearing somewhere that it was light based, so a lamp on a timer should help alleviate some of the issues with winter laying, I would think.
D.
It really depends on the size of your little lady duck. Depending on how big she is, as to how big you want to build her a box. My Cayugas are massive, so we are just going to let them discuss housing arrangements with the Jersey Giants who use a 18 inch cube nest box. the Harlequins on the...
we have been keeping my ducks in with the wife's chickens till the rest of the garden fence is up. We have a 3 inch deep 9x13 one duck bath in for a water dish at the moment, the 6 foot plastic kiddy pool is going to be sunk into the middle of the garden. They are both being fed sprouted...

No problems at all... and for a prize show bird I would like as not go out of my way like that. The experience you helped them get at the college is awesome. We are indeed going to be breeding, but they have to be a little older than the juveniles they are now before we can do...
Here are the pics of the new babies...
I am really curious about the little black one. I dunno what the heck type he is.
Oh, and the Cayuga in the background is the juvenile hen that has become surrogate mommy. she got so exited that she shook and then darted all over doing her happy...
Bear with me here as I am still new to the boards and I am still working out how to post pictures, but they will be up, I swear!... have them on the computer, now I need to figure the process of getting them up here. They are rumored to be Pekins... and with two of them I can see that, but the...
Also, on a broader note to the whole thread, I am falling in love with my Cayugas. (the wife has chickens, I have 10 little slobs) We have 4 Cayugas, (2 hens, 2 drakes) and a pair of Welsh Halry Hens... and the 4 we got this morning from a friend, who's friend's friend is a school teacher and...

Well, we are raising them as both egg and meat ducks. As to Angel Wing, my research is that it is caused by too much protein, not too little, and that it is a genetically passed trait, so I do want to remove that from the gene pool if it is, but I will do more research. He is also the...
I would say presence... make sure you talk to them a little morning and evening minimum.
I know Cayugas are a different breed and they are a ton more sociable from the sounds of it, but mine are still a little skittish. I have trained them to 'Sit' once I can catch one and pick them up, but...
