    NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi NYers! It's been a very long time since I've been here! I live in Tully, south of Syracuse, for the last three years, and have been able to have a small backyard flock (currently three hens) in accordance with local law. Well, the mayor who was responsible for Tully allowing chickens, has...

    Hen self-mutilation??

The head hen in my flock seems to be pulling her own feathers. Last year, when she was 8 or 9 months old, I noticed that she had pulled the feathers out on her belly, where I couldn't see them unless I picked her up. Some people said she may be going broody, but never did. But in the last two...

I'll rehome one now too, to relieve at least some of the crowding. Well, googling "hen saddle" just pretty much made my night!!

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Thanks Pyxis. I knew there was a certain amount of space they needed, but couldn't remember. I will get on him about the coop extension. I really want to be able to keep 6, but wont do it if they aren't happy. I'm feeling really guilty now that I've noticed the one missing some feathers...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Yes, they always have feed and water. Right now they are all getting starter/grower because of the younger ones, with egg shells and/or oyster shells free choice for the egg layers. The coop is small, maybe 4.5' x 4.5' x 4.5', but there are two roosting bars and more than enough space for the...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

I need some help or advice please... I have four hens who are somewhere around 18 months old, I've had them since chicks. This spring I added 3 beautiful chicks who are about 4.5 months old at this point. Three eggs in two weeks have been broken. They aren't eaten, but there's a hole in them...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Bad year for the veggie garden for sure. Of close to 20 winter squash plants I have seen 3 or 4 female flowers. None have taken so far. Barely any zucchini either, two from each plant so far. Tomatoes are looking good, but the rabbits ate most everything else, so it's either way behind (peppers...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

I noticed a month or so ago that my head chicken, Bandit, had some "curly" feathers on her chest. Some days she would have a few, some days none. They are generally around the same place. Then I started noticing she's more skittish and less likely to squat for me than usual. Generally she's the...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Ugh Lapeerian, so sorry :( I have a question about helping my littlest hen. She has been the lowest in the hierarchy always. With the 4 hens it hasn't been a problem, she just waits her turn. But now that my three pullets are catching up to her in size (they are almost 4 months old) I am...

Pyxis, I would absolutely call Animal Control. Pigs are so smart, they problem solve, so the more you try to protect the chicken feed, the harder it will work to get to it, now that it's found it.

I know that Oregano Essential oil has awesome antibiotic properties for humans, so I wouldn't hesitate to try it on other creatures too.

    NY chicken lover!!!!

What about chipmunks? Suddenly about a week ago a little chipmunk has moved into my yard. I believe it's living under the deck and digging in a few places in the garden?? Squirrels haven't been around in a while, which is just fine with me.

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Gramma, and others, so sorry for loses and predators. I feel so lucky I haven't dealt with this issue yet. I have given up on my garden for the year, sadly. I have a few fat rabbits who have eaten everything except tomatoes and squash, INCLUDING a row of DILL and ONIONS, which I am just...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Lapeerian, I started my flock in town just over a year ago. It's been going great, and people know I'm the "lady with chickens" in town. Haha A couple things that I did ahead of time that made things MUCH easier: I use the deep litter method instead of hay, and I use fermented feed. I think with...
