    looking for baby chicks

:jumpyYes, I'm looking for preferably Buff Orpingtons. If I can't find those, I'll take Rhode Island Reds. No bantams. I love bantams; they are just too cute to butcher!!!! Can't do it. I'd like a run of mostly females. Will consider a straight run. Would like around 50 chicks.

I'm giving up on this whole rooster thing.

My roo is a rip snort, too alright. If I ease around, he usually does. But if I move too fast; here he comes with that neck a bristling. His spurs are down right pointed and lethal looking. I'm planning to take some wire pliers and snip the ends off or a metal file if that doesn't work. I'm...

how does this broody thing work??

Sure like the idea of marking the eggs in the brood! As for my hens; I had a brooder last October but that is just the wrong time for chicks. I just took her off the nest and gathered the eggs much to her chagrin!!! She'd peck the fire out of me if I didn't move her by her tail. She...

    Feed 'n hen apples

I appreciate the info about feeding scratch. Didn't know that it raised the body temp. I mixed it in with egg crumble and corn. I'll keep doing that for now 'cause cooler weather is coming on. I also mix in food grade DE with my feed and feed only non-medicated feed. I put it in my 30...

How to Prepare Your Flock For Winter 101 *Official Thread*

I've done some reading of articles and posts. With 2 roos and 9 hens in a 4x7 coop with a big fenced outdoor run, I'm just going to watch my chickens and go from there. I'll likely hang tarps to keep the winds off them seeings my barn wood does have gaps.

    Hawk Question

Yes, I've been wondering about that, too. My chickens are in a large run with the chicken house in the corner of it. We get significant ice storms and snows in the winter, so I haven't put anything over the top to help deter the hawks. I hope my roos and my dog give them enough hesistation!
