    Roost question

No, for two reasons: 1.The space behind the coop is pretty narrow. 2. My husband thinks it will be too much of a pain.

    Roost question

I need to reconfigure my current roosting set up. Right now I have 5 chickens roosting at night inside a 4' x 4' coop. My kids just got me 3 babies for my birthday. I realize it will be a little tight in there, especially bc the nests are also inside, but they have a covered & huge uncovered run...

    Sick non-laying leghorn

I'm a little worried about my leghorn. She's a little over a year old and isn't laying anymore. She started laying August 2019 and stopped in December 2019, right around the same time my other 4 girls stopped for the season. The rest of my flock started back up again in February. She's my...

Why has my Leghorn stopped laying?

Hmmm...I don't think her comb has changed much. That second photo of her on the white chair is from February. The first one on the tire was today.

    Chicken attracted to yellow?

When I wear my rain boots into the run, the girls go crazy pecking at them!

Why has my Leghorn stopped laying?

My 1yr old Leghorn started laying eggs last August-ish. Then once daylight started getting shorter in December, she & my other girls stopped laying. Well, here it is April and everyone has returned to normal laying schedule except her! She is my smallest hen, could that have anything to do with...

    Adding to Flock

The hutch is similar to this. We've modified it to be predator proof, added a ramp out & roost. I know it's small for full size birds...only meant to be temp brooder outside. It's right next to the larger coop inside the run. The girls should be able to see each other.

    Adding to Flock

Hello, I have (2) 3wk old chicks inside in a brooder I am hoping to put outside soon. The temps here are 60's/40's. I read the article & comments about integrating as early as 4 wks and got a few helpful hints. My main coop/run has (4) 1 yr old girls in it. We've added on an un-covered run &...

    Bare Chicken Butts

Oh ya my mistake, I guess it is 4 x 12! My husband does the building & I'm the primary care provider. Hahaha! So they may be picking at each other at night while roosting? Interesting! We can definitely add another roost in there. Not sure about expanding the run though. I'll try introducing...

    Bare Chicken Butts

-I'm not sure if they are molting, I'm still still a newbie. The rest of their feathers look normal. -They are eating Nutrena Nature Smart Organic Pellets - 16% Protein. Is this enough? - Snacks include a handful of grapes or whatever fruit we have. Sometimes meal worms or handful of scratch...

    Bare Chicken Butts

Hi! About 2 weeks ago I noticed 2 of my 4 girls had bare rumps. No blood or obvious signs of trauma. I cleaned out their nesting boxes, put in new substrate, cleaned the coop interior, sprayed an herbal mite be gone spray everywhere & sprinkled DE on the floor inside. We have sand in the run &...

Comment by 'DustyChick' in article 'Our San Jose Chicken Coop'

Thanks! My husband & kids had a great time building our coop. We have a total of 12 of the ventilation holes in the coop. Thinking of adding 2 more on the chalk board panel above the roost bar. And yes, our pit bull/lab mutt has been a great protector. She's been so sweet & gentle around them...

Yes, he's crowing all day long. He also rounds up the girls & keeps them in line with a little pecking on the head. This picture was taken a few weeks ago. His comb is much more pronounced with 3 distinct rows.

    Our San Jose Chicken Coop

My husband spent all spring making this coop for me & the girls. This was his first time framing something out. We looked at many different designs online & picked features we liked from all of them. We live in the city with a small backyard so our space was limited. The run is 4' x 12 with a 4'...
