Oh, HELP! HELP! What do I do now?

Sounds to me like you are doing good,. Just remember to open as infrequently as you can so you don't lose too much humidity. I have hatches with different dates all the time, just let them do their thing and remove hatchlings like every 12 hours or so, once they are good and dry. At least you...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Quote: Not entirely apples and oranges. I am a smallhold farmer and breeding criterion are the same in all species, really. You select what is important to you and you move forward on your path. I also do AKC shows as well as producing dogs for very specialized purposes (SAR, service dogs for...

    Looking for other Lakenvelder breeders

Hoping this is the right place for this thread... I have had Lakenvelders in the past, and I am just getting back into them this year. I have a nice batch of 16 here at the moment. I had to go to a hatchery because I could not find any local breeders and I have had really bad luck with shipped...

    Heritege Breed poster

I raise Lakenvelders, which are a heritage breed. We are currently on the "Threatened" list. I have had both colors, though at the moment I only have the whites. They are beautiful birds, lay decent sized white eggs, grow slowly, and are kind of long lived. Tough little guys, and great foragers.

Help! SNAKES!! Anybody have any magic fix for a snake population explosion??!

For those who are curious: We do not know what started the Snake Migration last year but it does appear to have been a one time thing. We asked around and others in the area were having the same issues. This year, we have seen VERY few snakes, and I have to say that the geese are marvelous. Will...

Help! SNAKES!! Anybody have any magic fix for a snake population explosion??!

Sorry guys, was out of pocket for a bit, but the netting is great! Bonus: the geese will get the snakes that get in the netting LOL they treat it like a private snack stand. So far only lost one other baby, one of the Brahmas stuck its head under the fence and got caught, but the rest are doing...

Help! SNAKES!! Anybody have any magic fix for a snake population explosion??!

Update: I got some of the deer netting, and kind of wrapped it around the legs of my brooder so that no snake could shinny up there without having to pass through it. Looking forward to seeing if that helps! Well, really kind of hoping I won't see any more in the house anyway, but it's an old...

    Incubators Anonymous

...I think the eggs were too old, plus I got a text from the breeder asking if I got any because she was thinking maybe her roo was getting infertile. *sigh* She didn't get any either, so at least I know it's not me, or the 'bator. I should have had peeps this past Thursday, but I am giving up...

Is there a cure for hatching withdrawal?

I just had my last hatch go bad (I think the eggs were too old when I started) so I have no new peeps to distract myself, and I have to go out of town towards the end of this month so I cannot start any new ones. How do you handle hatching withdrawals? I find myself on Ebay looking at hatching...

Help! SNAKES!! Anybody have any magic fix for a snake population explosion??!

Purpletree, they are killing the young babies in the brooders, and have managed to strangle a couple of the older chickens that were just put outside, although apparently were unable to swallow them afterwards. One got into the brooder and ate three chicks, then was too big to get out. I will...

Help! SNAKES!! Anybody have any magic fix for a snake population explosion??!

COOL idea, Mtnlaurl! That makes a great deal of sense, and it's economical too :) CarolinaSculpture, I will see if I can find that at Atwoods. can't hurt! I am definitely tired of these black snakes.

Help! SNAKES!! Anybody have any magic fix for a snake population explosion??!

Not yet, still seeing way too many, but someone suggested I get some *adult* geese, so now I am the proud owner of a pair of China Whites, at least they have the knobs on the bills so I presume they are Chinas. My son caught them this afternoon playing tug of war with a black snake, so I am...

OK, here's a new game... what kind of geese are these?

...why they were just marked 'goose eggs' without what kind on the box; most of the time when I see hatching eggs, the breed is noted, but it's *illegal* to sell Canada eggs here. If the seller knew they were Canadas, they might have just foisted them off as 'goose eggs' in order to get out of...

OK, here's a new game... what kind of geese are these?

I dunno what the deal is; I've never had geese before this year and now I have geese just kind of 'finding' me coming out of the woodwork LOL

OK, here's a new game... what kind of geese are these?

Actually, they are not either. The reason I know this is that I came into possession of a young African brown about their age and level of fledging, plus they are not building the 'knob' on the top of the bill. Let me see if I can get some decent pictures of the three of them together for...

Aggressive gosling... any goose experts have a suggestion?

Thanks Miss Lydia. The outside pens are pretty big, and they get turned out into the yard every day when I am home to watch them. I try to make sure there are nesting boxes, clumps of weeds, big water tubs, etc for them to be able to get away from one another and to provide interesting stuff for...

Aggressive gosling... any goose experts have a suggestion?

OK, new question: I have come into possession of a new African brown gosling, about the same size as these two young Mystery Geese. (One thing I can definitely rule out: These are not Africans, they look nothing like this guy!) The African is about the same size as the other two. Do you think it...

OK, here's a new game... what kind of geese are these?

My son got me some hatching geese eggs for Mother's Day at a poultry swap meet but didn't find out what *kind* they were. I really love the little devils, but I keep looking at pictures of baby geese and I can't figure out what kind these might be. Any guesses? Here they are in the transport...
