So i helped it out...membrane was pretty dry. The chick is really wet and sleeping. Humidity in the incubator is 70% for the remaining eggs. Should I move this little one to the brooder to dry off?
I'm hatching chicks for the first time. 3 hatched no problem and then I came home from work and found one that didn't make it because the humidity dropped. My question is there is another pipped egg and i can hear chirping. Should i assume the membrane is dry in this egg and try to help? And...
I have a BO hen about 1 year old. She's had swelling that has gradually been worsening over the past 4-5 months located under her vent. She has been acting just fine, eating, laying eggs, foraging ect however the swelling/growth has been worsening. Tonight I aspirated a small amount of...
Hello,
I have a flock of 11 hens...4 RIR's, 3 BO's, and 4 BR's. I've been dying to add some silkies to the bunch for my kiddos. One of my BO's is broody and I'm planning to slip her some fertile silkie eggs. My question is, will integration into a flock of big girls be easier since they are...
Thanks so much for your reply!! The pic is adorable:) I'm still trying to hunt down some silkie eggs but hoping to get my broody something to sit on soon!!
Hi All,
I'm relatively new to chicken keeping...got my first round of peepers last fall who have matured into a nice flock of eggs layers. 3 BO's, 4 RIR's, and 4 BR's...all hens. One of my Buff's has gone broody and I'm dying to add a few silkies to the mix. I have a few questions regarding...
Thank you all for the specifics....so very helpful!! I am so excited to get started with this process! Now to get the hubby to build me my bins
@HennyPennyCO I'm having a little chuckle because my daughters reading story for tonight was Henny Penny
I am in the country with neighbors about 300 meters away. It's VERY cold here right now...in the 2-15 degree F range and lower with windchill but not a ton of snow currently. I do garden. I have a vegetable garden with rows as well as raised garden box. I also have lots of flower beds in my...
Ha! @vehve Your comments are not taken as negative. I'm looking for sound advice....not fluffy make me feel good comments:) Sadly it seems that the old adage "if it seems too good to be true it probably is" appears to apply to the compost tumblers. Thank you @vehve and @lazy gardener for...
Yep i'm definitely lurking! No tales to share yet as I've not composted...however I am most interested in composting! I was looking at building a system like the picture I've included. I was also trying to determine if you can keep composting through the winter months...and it looks like if...
I have seven 22 week old pullets and four 18 week old pullets. No one is laying yet, but some of my older girls look like they could any day now. I've read it's okay to switch to an All flock Feed (18% protein) with free choice to oyster shell. Just looking for some additional feedback to make...
Yooper I considered adding light but decided to let them mature naturally this first year. Not sure that makes a difference but just what I decided. My coop is draft free, but I don't want to do the added heat. I guess maybe it's not so bad not having eggs yet if they would be freezing anyhow!!
Cluckey I have seven 20 week olds (RIR's, BO's, BR's) and four 14 week olds (2 BO's and 2 BR's). I'm not opposed to supplemental light but wanted to let them mature naturally their first year. So I too have been told not to expect eggs until spring. My older ladies are getting extremely red...
I know this is off the subject, but I live in Wisconsin too and am waiting on my chickens to start laying. I figured there was no way they would start in these temperatures!! What kind of chickens do you have and how old are they? I am so anxious for my first egg!! My nesting boxes and coop...
I also use Sweet PDZ on the poop board and a combination of sand and Sweet PDZ on the floor of the coop. It makes a huge difference in smell and...as the others have mentioned is really easy to clean with a scoop. I also really like that there is far less material to compost then if I used...
When I cleaned out the nesting boxes tonight it was obvious that both the older and younger ladies had been in there. There is a distinct difference in the size of the droppings between the 2 groups:) Looks like a combination of both theories is right! Lets hope they mature out of this habit...
