Chicken has swollen face. Is it a disease or housing problem?

Thank you all for the advice. I actually do have VetRx on hand and will get the permethrin spray tomorrow. I plan on applying the VetRx tonight. None of my other chickens have any symptoms of scaly leg/face and look relatively normal. I also checked my precious polish hen for mites around her...

Chicken has swollen face. Is it a disease or housing problem?

Hi everyone. So just today I noticed that my Dorking hen, probably around 5 yrs. old or more, has a pretty swollen face (I’ve attached a picture below). Besides that, she is acting fairly normal, foraging, etc. My concern is that, if it is some sort of disease, the rest of my flock may become...

1 Chicken killed by hawk, now what?

Not sure what type of hawk it was, I only got a small look at it. Hopefully I'll see it again soon to find out. She was actually the smallest bird in my flock, not sure if she was a bantam or not. My concern was that even though she was small and defenseless, it looks as if the entire attack...

1 Chicken killed by hawk, now what?

UPDATE: So it is definitely a hawk, I heard and saw it in my neighbors yard. Today it left behind a bunch of feather in my yard of some sort of wild bird, so I'm glad I left all of my girls in. What should I do to get rid of this problem?? I think it might be nesting next door, which is...

1 Chicken killed by hawk, now what?

That sounds like a good idea but I don't own a gun:hmm. Thanks for the tips though, I only have one Polish left and you bet I'll be watching her like a hawk (no pun intended). She has always had no problems getting around luckily.

1 Chicken killed by hawk, now what?

Hi guys, I have around 20 hens and a couple roosters (and about 10 ducks) which free range everyday before I put them away at night. Unfortunately, today I was in for an awful surprise. I won't go into detail, but 1 of my Buff Polish hens, which I gave haircuts to often because she just could...

    Cuckoo Marans he or she???

Wow, your story sounds a lot more interesting than mine. I just got an email from TSC and desperately had to restrain myself from running over there. I'll probably get stuck with some chicks anyways because one of my ducks is on eggs, and no doubt there are some chicken eggs under her as well...

    “Rare breed” ID help needed!

It is too early to say for sure but right now there are no definite signs of rooster.

    Rooster?

x2 Crazy for Chickens. Red wattles that early on usually means rooster, I think your instinct was right:( However, it does depend on their age. The Australorps in this pic, seen at 7 weeks, are really easy to tell apart. Because it looks like your chick is a couple weeks younger and already...

    Cuckoo Marans he or she???

Just by the comb I think it's a he, usually the hens don't develop any pink or red/larger combs until later on. I saw that you have other chicks as well too, and now I really want some more but I already have too many:hmm:lol:. You can compare this Cuckoo with the other chicks just to see the...

New Bantys need to know what type! Please help!

Whoops, sorry. I didn't realize the description said pea and rose comb. Good catch.

New Bantys need to know what type! Please help!

Without a picture, it is tough to tell, but to me that description sounds like some bantam buff brahmas. If they are brahmas, you are very lucky! What a great breed!

Not sure of the breeds of these girls and the roo

If you're looking for a good feathered-legged breed, I've always had good luck with Brahmas;).

Could the bird in pic 3 be an Olive Egger?

Any Full Breeds or All Mixed?

Thanks dunnmom, and I did notice that she was missing some feathers in the back. I looked up possible causes and I just thought it was moulting. Definitely not mites. I'll try to figure out what's going on. Could a rooster cause that?

Not sure of the breeds of these girls and the roo

Not an expert by any stretch but...:wee 1st Pic: Buff Orpington, one of my favorites 2nd Pic: Barred Rock because of the single comb 3rd Pic: Possibly Black Easter Egger? Do you get any different colored eggs? 4th Pic: The hen is probably a Black Sex-Link, the roos are likely Anconas 5th Pic...

Any Full Breeds or All Mixed?

Hi guys, I recently bought 4 beautiful young chickens from a breeder and was wondering if any of them were full breeds. The seller didn't really mention any breeds so I thought maybe one of you could help. If you need better pictures just let me know, this was the best I could do for tonight. I...

    Any roosters in this bunch?

I believe Golden Comets are sex-links, so with the right feather pattern they are definitely female. I would just watch out for chicks that begin to get red/bigger crests early on or sometimes develop feathers slower than the others because that usually indicates a roo. Post pictures every week...

Is this really a Silver-Laced Wyandotte?

Some SLW hens have fewer lighter-colored spots, as seen in the picture below. As their feathers mature, I imagine more spots will appear. I've never raised a SLW (although I'd love to) but knowing from a Golden Laced Cochin and Speckled Sussex, that is usually how it works. Also, how old is the...

    Rooster Breeds?

@Lunachixster My rooster looks almost identical to yours! He hatched last summer as a mixed breed, but it's just funny that they're so similar! I have no guess of what the breed is though.:idunno
