Cathleen... hoping I can still catch you here! Do you still sell hatching eggs? I'm desperate for White Cornish for my kids to raise with their agriculture group (like a knock-off of 4H). We ordered some White-Laced Reds, but honestly I can see my kids getting frustrated with the technicality of...
Ollie looks like a boy to me, from the fact that he seems to be feathering in black. Females are a ruddy gray color with a salmon breast. Looking closely at his breast feathers would tell you for sure. If they're lightly colored (red, salmon, even tan), Ollie is a girl. If they are dark, nearly...
I have a 2 and 1/2 year old Production Red hen. She was acting lethargic a few days ago, not eating like everyone else. I picked her up, felt her crop (for impaction or sour crop), and she vomited clear liquid (I presumed water - there was no smell). I held her upside down and massaged her crop...
Thank you! Are you able to keep both and test mate them? I would breed Squiggy to a female with straight toes - it's probably just a deformity that was created through the hatching process. I'm thinking it's probably not an inherited trait he can pass down to his offspring. Hatch 10 eggs or so...
NDgoatgirl, tried following your link and unfortunately it says it can't be displayed because I don't have permission to view - could you post a screenshot of what you are trying to let us see?
kittydoc, have you tried Facebook? There's a FB group called Dorking Club USA. Most of what I've heard about Horstman lines are positive - though I have never ordered from him personally. I tried for years to get Dorkings until someone pointed me in the direction of that FB group. They have an...
Thank you everyone for your replies. I am reassured this is a pullet. I am very happy, she's my only BCM that made it from that hatch. As she is not a breeding bird, simply bought for colorful eggs, I am not having a problem with her overly black appearance. :)
This Black Copper Marans chick has been giving me trouble since hatch! I can't seem to figure out if I think it's a rooster or hen. I'm usually so good at this, but I'm second guessing myself. If it's a rooster, why is it SO BLACK?! Roosters are supposed to be colorful, right?! Has anyone seen...
Out of the breeds that she raises, what would be the mix? The only thing I could think of is Orpington x Campine but she's really thick bodied unlike a Campine so I don't know if that's accurate.
She raises Campines, Orpingtons, CCLs, Cochins, Seramas, EEs, Speckled Sussex and Silkies.
I bought hatching eggs from a breeder in Alabama who was amazing and helpful. I bought only Cochins but I had a chick hatch who was a mystery - she was definitely not a Cochin.
The breeder is aware and has been so sweet and helpful. I believe her when she says this is an Orpington but I am...
Thank you Leaf. I'm planning on making a chick sandal later tonight, as well as treating him for splayed legs, just in case. The leg appears to be formed normally so I don't have any idea why the chick isn't using it. I'm going to try to give him some hard boiled egg yolk later and get him to...
I assisted the hatch of a Welsummer chick who hadn't made progress other than a large hole and who had begun drying in the shell. I am 100% confident without intervention this chick would not have survived. I didn't know the reason for it's inability to turn itself and zip without help but upon...
It appears wet in the photo, but it is almost like dried egg white - very stiff and hard. I checked his/her vent area to make sure this stuff wasn't plugging her up there in case it has to poo. It doesn't appear to be blocking the vent but is very stuck to her tail area and when I tried poking...
My chicks are in their own room in the house but this morning one of my kids accidentally didn't shut the door all the way and our cat pushed it open. She didn't want to kill the chicks but they must have been tempting to swat at because she did claw one of them along the bottom, drawing blood...
