Not sure if a future reader with similar problem might find an update to be helpful, but we did see the chicken vet this morning. He advised to cull the two birds and any others with the rattling breath sounds, give oxytetracycline to the remaining flock and see if there are any changes in a...
Thanks for the response! It seems like this might be an ongoing thing that will infect the upcoming batch of birds we originally planned on (this flock was a bit of a surprise), but I'll keep your suggestions in mind for the next group.
Thanks for the info. Yes my first reaction is definitely "Get them out of here!!!", haha. It crossed my mind to keep them, but we've only had these birds for around a week. We planned to get chicks that would fare better over our cold winters (north-central Ontario, Canada), and these ones...
Thank you. We talked to a vet this afternoon who will take a look at a bird this week. He mentioned respiratory viruses being grouped into three categories - those that are treatable or will run its course like a cold, those with treatable symptoms but will recur with stress, and those that...
Thanks for the response. Ugh, that's what I feared... I so regret getting these birds. Yes, we were going to hang on to the birds and hopefully treat them before sending them off, I did not realize they will always be carriers though. So, you say cull the flock then..? How would you...
Hello,
Hopefully this is the right thread to post.
We just received an unplanned "gift" flock of 20 little red hens recently, and planned to pass half along to friends this week when they finish their coop. The owner is a family friend and due to an unfortuate circumstance, could no longer...
Ohh sorry about the 4. :( We just ordered 13 because we're also hatching some next week. The chicks are a mix of Ameraucanas, RIRs, Black Jersey Giants, and Cuckoo Marans. They're all doing great and all aspire to be great escape artists too! The Ameraucanas sure can fly, for being little...
I have a week-old RIR chick who doesn't look right. Compared to the other chicks, her crop appears very round and large, though feels as solid as the others on palpation. Her rear end also appears to be distended - she looks more the shape of a duckling! Her behavior is the same as the other...
How big is the coop you were given? If your chickens are outside or in a run during the day, you could get away with a smaller coop. If you mean your free coop is too small for 4 hens.. Can you cut off a wall and make it a bit bigger for now..?
I agree pallets are cheap but definitely not...
They sure are busy! Running around too much for me to get many decent photos.
2 Black Jersey Giants
3 Americaunas
5 Cuckoo Marans
3 Rhode Island Reds
The two blackies are very different... One has a yellow belly and white wing feathers, the other has black wing feathers and just a yellow...
Thanks for posting this! I've made one for my week-old chicks who arrived yesterday. After putting them in the brooder, they waltzed on over to their cave as if they always had one.. They really seem to enjoy running in and out, taking cat (chick?)-naps on the top, and generally jumping...
We will (hopefully) be acquiring fifteen 8-week-old chickens this weekend!
It's been a few years since I've had hens... And would like to supplement their diets with as many free things as possible! I'm expecting them to go to town on our yard which is lightly forested - covered in...
Hello everyone, was redirected to this one, hope it's right this time...
I'm new here, recently relocated to beautiful North Kawartha, Ontario... In my previous life I lived around lots of farmland and am now slowly getting used to the thought of needing to deer-proof the garden (after...
