Hello everyone, was redirected to this one, hope it's right this time...

I'm new here, recently relocated to beautiful North Kawartha, Ontario... In my previous life I lived around lots of farmland and am now slowly getting used to the thought of needing to deer-proof the garden (after building raised beds on top of the one inch of composted tree needles which cover solid granite!) and bear-proof the compost pile, etc!

Previously had Barnevelders, Americaunas, RIRs, and Blue Andalusians.

Interested in maybe getting Russian Orloff, Easter Eggers, Welsummers, True Blue and Cuckoo Marans this year, and/or hatch some.. My husband's family hatched theirs every year, and I'm excited to try! We are currently researching/gleaning BYC wisdom to plan out a coop for very cold weather, accessibility in lots of snow, and good protection from predators (the usual coons, weasels, otters, also the occasional bear)..

We are also interested in having some ducks, as we live on a small lake that functions more like a pond.. I would like to use the lake for something, but we might not be able to give them adequate care in the winter (from what I understand, ducks need a certain depth of water changed several times a day if kept inside - which they would require in the winter - ?).

Anyway, these are probably all topics for different threads! Would be great to hear from anyone in the area, or elsewhere! Excited to have found this website and share info with everyone here. Ahh!

Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
