Broody Bantams for Sale x 2 - Gold Coast, Queensland Australia

We have 2 bantams that are constantly broody. We let them have chicks once but we can't really do it again because we do not need anymore chooks. They only seem to be happy when they are sitting on eggs or raising chicks so we have decided to let them go to a new home where they can raise chicks...

Is my hen molting or sick ?

Quote: I forgot to mention - I did give her some garlic, mince meat, and probiotic-live active culture yogurt (not all at the same time) as well as extra TLC so I don't know if any of those helped. She wasn't interested in much other food or grain but she does like all the above and couldn't...

Is my hen molting or sick ?

Just thought I wouuld give you an update. Whatever it was, she's snapped out of it. I've been monitoring her the last week and she's back to her normal self again and she's also back to laying eggs again for the last couple of days. I think it must he been related to the molt and maybe because...

Electric wire to keep chickens on our block of land

Quote: Hi all I realise it's been over a month since my last posting - but thought I'd give you one last update. We looked into the electric wire option but there seemed to be too many people saying there's only a 50% chance of it working due to many different reasons so we didn't want to...

Is my hen molting or sick ?

Hi all It's just coming to the end of the molting season here in this part of QLD, Australia and my 6 hens which are about 12-18 mths old haven't been laying as regular as usual over the last couple of months but they are just starting to lay more regularly again over the last week. 5 out of...

Electric wire to keep chickens on our block of land

Hi again Thanks for your input everyone. I forgot to mention that the other reason we don't really want to put up a high fence is because Kangaroos go back and forth between the blocks of land here and we don't want to block their path. Also we are on 2 acre blocks here so that's a LOT of...

What age can cockerels leave the flock

Thanks again for your feedback everyone. I think I'll give it another week or two at least until they start crowing to make sure they are definately roosters, then I'll see if I can find a good home for them (hopefully someone who doesn't want to eat them).

What age can cockerels leave the flock

Quote: A few people have suggested that I keep them for future eating but I just can't 't do it and I don't really want them to goto anyone else for dinner either. I'm hoping they can go to a good home where they can just be roosters.

What age can cockerels leave the flock

Quote: Thanks for your reply. I'm not 100% certain but I am assuming 3 out of 4 are roosters because at 12 weeks old they are so tall and have very long legs compared to my hens. They also walk around with their heads very high, unlike the hens. I don't want to get rid of them because I've...

What age can cockerels leave the flock

Hi there We have 3 cockerels that we need to sell because we don't have room in the flock for all 3. At what age should we sell them. They are 12 weeks old now. Two out of 3 are still following mother hen around the yard but I don't think it will be long before they are independent. Thanks Dorothy

Watery eye + lice, mites, worms or something like that around her eye

Hello again, Thought I would give you a final update. My little bantam's eye has been wide open now for 2 days. It's no longer watery, the swelling around her eye lid has gone down a lot and almost looks normal again. The little crusty lump has also reduced in size and hardly noticeable. I...

Watery eye + lice, mites, worms or something like that around her eye

Hi all Took my little bantam to the Avian specialist this afternoon and it turns out that she has fowl pox which is a viral disease which is spread by the bites of mosquitoes. In addition to her watery eye she has a crustly looking small lump on her eye lid and this is how the specialist...

Watery eye + lice, mites, worms or something like that around her eye

I'm back again - Thought I would leave you another update - my little bantam seemed better this morning but by late afternoon her eye was closed again and looking watery when she opens it.
