do dark yellow or orange yolks mean they are healthier.

I read through a couple pages and as far as I can tell ya'll are missing a great supplement for dark yolks... winter squash! Acron and butternut squash really enhance the yolk color, and it's rather easy to grow, store, and feed all year. My friend who is an organic farmer feeds his hens...

    Lone Toulouse Goose

Well Syracuse is the midpoint between us just eyeballing the map. I'd be willing to make the drive out there to meet you given that I can find something fun to do in the city. :p

    Lone Toulouse Goose

Actually I can see on your profile you say you are in upstate New York. I live in Western New York. We can probably work something out since we live in the same state. :p

Goose tried to drown a duck. Should I be worried?

They can and will drown ducks, but mine never have and from all that I have heard they rarely do. It's actually more common in kiddie pools because they are trapped between the goose and the bottom. I have 13 geese and 34 (7 very fresh) ducks.

    Are German Shepherds Aggressive...?

There is a business in my area completely devoted to training German Shepherds. He does do personal protection dogs, and police dogs, but his most numerous clients are people that bought a GSD and weren't prepared for how powerful or wilfull they are. Most of the people resort to seeing Steve...

Switching Doe to Ivermectin after DuMor Goat Dewormer

Sad to hear you lost mom. Usually you can test kids at 8 months, but they will usually test positive if you've given them pasteurized (safe) milk from a CAE+ doe. The test is detecting antibodies to the virus, and the kids will make antibodies to a dead virus the same as a live one. If whatever...

Switching Doe to Ivermectin after DuMor Goat Dewormer

Well in both and perhaps all cases they should just be wormed. And CAE is a retrovirus (like HIV in humans) that goats get from one another via any and all fluids that contain white blood cells. There is some debate as to whether it can be spread through feces and saliva as well as blood and...

    What does this mean?

Reaffirming his relationship with his mate and young. My geese do it after they are reunited walking around different sides of the cars in the driveway.

Switching Doe to Ivermectin after DuMor Goat Dewormer

So I dosed them with Ivermectin and had the vet out today to give them their vaccines and draw blood to test for the big three in the does. Kids were vaccinated too and we had the boys emasculated. We have had them quarantined in "the worst goat enclosure in the history of mankind." That I built...

Switching Doe to Ivermectin after DuMor Goat Dewormer

So long story short we are starting our foray into goat keeping. We bought three nubian kids at auction eleven days ago, and got two free nubian does today. The kids have already been dosed with pour-on ivermectin since they were COVERED in biting lice. One of the does is very thin which is why...

    Poults Going Blind?

The feed is fresh (I work at the store), their eyes are clear, no obvious scratches, oozing, redness etc., I brood in 55 gallon totes with a layer of pellet horse bedding and hay or pine on top. The horse bedding absorbs moisture and then turns into sawdust, which as far as I'm concerned makes...

    Poults Going Blind?

Self blue. As far as I know they aren't closely related, the Tom is a slate and their mother must be one of the 2 self blues that we have. I will post a pic as soon as possible.

    Poults Going Blind?

I'm sure they are eating. They're growing well enough and their feathers are coming in. They have been sleeping face down in the feeder. Everyone is getting Kalmbach Chick Starter and I just gave them a hard boiled egg because one chick (Cochin bantams) seemed to not be growing as quickly. That...

    Poults Going Blind?

I posted this in the turkey forum, but I'm quickly beginning to think that this might be an emergency if it is contagious. It seems that both of my blue slate (blue) poults, one 4 days old, the other 7 days old, have gone blind? They obviously weren't when they hatched, they found food and...

    Poults Going Blind?

It seems that both of my blue slate (blue) poults, one 4 days old, the other 7 days old, have gone blind? They obviously weren't when they hatched, they found food and water after some coaxing and had to be visually enticed to eat. Now they have no reaction to nearly poking them in the eyes, and...

    Do Turkeys Hate Santa?

I know its a little past Christmas, but this morning I woke up late to let out the birds and haul out water. This isn't an issue except that in my rush to release everyone I stuck on my big "ugly" red Christmas sweater. We have ten blue slates with seven jakes and three hens, all about nine...

Toulouse Geese: Male or Female... any way to tell??

In my experience when raising goslings which had been sexed the females developed color in their legs and beaks much more quickly than the males. Though this is the exact opposite of what some people have been thinking, this has been the case with all five goslings I have raised.

    WTB Touluose Goose

I had the same thing happen last year. Had absolutely no luck and ended up getting a trio from Cackle Hatchery this spring. The gander thought he was dad and took the goslings (and ducklings) under his wing. I hope you have better luck than me finding a goose for him!
