DIY HUMANE way to Kill Slaughter Chicken (Stun-kill, Gas)

Thank you, thank you, BYC for this informative and helpful thread. As a newbie (my flock is 2.5 years old) I have finally come to the need to take care of roosters. Actually, I made my hubby do it the first two times. This time, I realized that I'm a big girl, and I need to take the FULL...

How To Get Rid Of A Rooster?

Oh, I recommend that you do not just "leave him out at night". Someone left their noisy rooster out at a park next door to me and he was mean enough to stay alive (probably scared all the coons and coyotes away). Then, he crowed all night and all day, driving all of the neighbors crazy. Finally...

Lethargic Hen, can hardly stay awake...any ideas what it could be?

I've found that when mine lose their appetite due to injury or illness, they can sometimes be tempted with a little bit of scrambled egg, or else some cooked rice soaking in milk. Liquid is more important than food, I've also given meat broth with a bit of meat in it. No idea how to help her...

    Fatal bee (or wasp) sting?

Thanks, I hadn't considered snakes. We do have small ones, but no poisonous snakes here in the Pacific Northwest. Could a duck die of a non-poisonous bite? On the other hand, I think that we do have brown recluse spiders and those are poisonous. If they are in our field here, then... YIKES!

Big Bird "tries" to help in the garden

Healthy soil is full of microbes and tiny insects and fungal hyphae ... maybe the birds eat it because they can process the protein nutrition out of it?

    ***warning To All Emu Owners***

I hope your sister learned to stop the disgusting habit of dropping her butts anywhere, not just in your yard! I will never understand why smokers do that ... those butts are full of toxic chemicals and germs.

    Fatal bee (or wasp) sting?

Did my sweet drake die of a bee sting? In the late afternoon yesterday, the three duck-hens were hanging out by themselves in the open area, and the drake was hunkered down about 15 yards away in the tall grassy/clover area. This was really unusual ... normally he is standing guard over the...

    OMG wild duck nest transplant

If there is a bird rehabilitation center near you (such as a Raptor Center or Wild bird rehab center or other wild animal rehab) they will probably have some good advice for saving the eggs and chicks. They are licensed to handle them and knowledgeable. Good for you for trying to do the right...

How to I make my chicks more friendly?

Every night when my girls are all in the coop, they all calm down and settle into their spots; they won't be skittish. I always go in and touch each one ... partly to do a head count making sure I have all of them inside, and partly to take the time to make them comfortable with being touched...

    Poo Poll

I keep a cat-box scoop in the coop, hanging on a nail, along with a large dustpan. Makes for very easy cleanup and drop it into the compost. For those of you who use disposeable gloves, please consider switching to something that's not single use plastic. You will save money, make less garbage...

Duck foot surgery IN Process/ swelling, no bumblefoot scab? Now what?

Thank you Phasian! Could you tell me more about the garlic oil and lavender oil? I do try to keep my small flock all organic, but the eggs are just for us (not for sale). We use Arnica on us humans for muscle pain and bruises -very effective- but why did you put it on the duck's foot? for the...

Why raise chooks for eggs when you can do ducks?

I keep 9 chickens and 6 ducks. This chickens are a lot less work to clean up after, the poop is less messy; and the water for the ducks takes time. The main thing for me is that the chickens are friendlier and more entertaining. I love the way they come to say hello when I go into the yard ...

Penicillin: How long will it last, stored in refrigerator?

Last April 2010, We purchased and used a small bottle of injectable penicillin from the Cenex to treat a chicken (with a compound leg fracture, amazingly, she healed) The pull date on the bottle is September 2011. We kept it cold in the fridge, but it settled out into clear liquid on the top...

Duck foot surgery IN Process/ swelling, no bumblefoot scab? Now what?

Thanks ... Do you recommend penicillin? I've given penicillin for one of our chickens, who broke her leg (compound fracture, very bad); we reset it and she lived. We could use the same dosage for the duck. Vet bills are not an option now. We will do as much as we can and appreciate all...

Duck foot surgery IN Process/ swelling, no bumblefoot scab? Now what?

This is Shadow's foot ...do you see anything unhealthy? Looks fine to me except a bit swollen. This is the top of Shadow's foot AFTER we lanced and drained. It was more swollen and red and hot, poor girl, before the lance. She seems more comfortable now, resting in a warm water bath. We...

Duck foot surgery IN Process/ swelling, no bumblefoot scab? Now what?

Shadow's foot has been sore for two weeks. It didn't start swelling until the second week. During the week, we brought her inside for an Epsom salt soak and a good look at it twice, and haven't been able to see anything that looked like a scab or black spot ... no indication of a bumblefoot...
