    Strange feather problem

No molting, she already molted back in the spring. And no, no roosters either. I'm in the city where they're not allowed so I have to keep things quiet. Am I going to have to pluck all these stripped feather shafts out so she can grow new feathers? She is going to freeze to death this winter...

    Strange feather problem

I just came home from a 2 week vacation to find one of my chickens almost totally defeathered! I had a neighbor feeding them for me while we were gone and she called me a few days before we came home to tell me it looked like one of the girls was losing her feathers. What an understatement...

Are these eggs old? Do they really need to be in the fridge??

We usually have about a two week old supply of eggs at any given time and they are never refrigerated and have yet to find a bad one. We will do the float test on some of the older ones to make sure before we use them though. Some we have had over 3 weeks and have still been fine.

Selling out of some chickens in GA..

Sorry I couldn't call this weekend, I just got home. Weekends are fine, except this coming weekend- I have 3 family birthdays to go to (son, wife & nephew) so it would be the weekend after next before I could meet. I also just noticed you had some Buff Orp babies, I might like a couple of the...

Selling out of some chickens in GA..

I'd like a couple of the SLW pullets- are any laying yet? I think the ones that you said are about 5-6 months old would be the ones I'd like since the 4 I currently have are about 7 months. If we could meet halfway that would be great. What days can you meet? My work schedule varies from day to...

Selling out of some chickens in GA..

How old are your SLW hens? I'd like a couple to add to my small flock. I'm in Atlanta- any chance we could meet halfway, like at the outlet mall on I75? Thanks, Richard

2 week olds outside in 70's?

I think we will just take them out for a few minutes to let them play and scratch around a bit. I wouldn't want to leave them out for very long so I think it sounds like they should be okay for about 10-15 minutes.

2 week olds outside in 70's?

Will it be okay to let my 2 week old chicks out in the yard for a while in low 70 degree temps?

    Help! Surprise chick delivery!

I would ask your immediate neighbors if they are okay with the idea, explaiing to them you aren't getting any noisy roosters and you will keep things cleaned up so there shouldn't be any bad odors. Also, promise an occasional egg delivery. Also, I tried to place my coop where it can't be seen...

Almost finished with the chicken tractor

Honest, Mr. Code Enforcment man, it's really just a small playfort for the kids! The sqwaking noises are just my kids being goofy!

Almost finished with the chicken tractor

I've spent about $240 on it. Unfortunately I had to buy all new wood and hardware except for screws and nails. Not a lot of building going on these days to scavenge scrap lumber from, and nothing turned up on Freecycle or Craigslist either.

Almost finished with the chicken tractor

Here's my take on the chicken tractor from Organic Gardening. I just made it longer (8') and taller (5') and only enclosed half of it since I only have 4 chickens. I still have to stain and cover the lower door with mesh and make the ramp for them to get in. I also will cover the rest of the...

Differences in week old Plymouth Rock chicks

I really wonder if I got a few older chicks and this one chick was the only one that was actually shipped right after it hatched. The 2 RIR I have look exactly the same as the more developed Plymouth Rock as far as their feather development. The primaries are about an inch long compared to the...

Differences in week old Plymouth Rock chicks

I have 2 one week old Plymouth Rocks and one of them seems to be growing much faster than the other- is this normal? The smaller one you can barely see the wing feathers where the older looking one has much longer wing feathers. Also the bigger one has a larger patch of white on it's head. Could...

    Chicks finally arrived- pics

My chicks finally made it and all appear healthy and fine. As soon as I unboxed them and put them in the brooder they made a beeline for the water and food just like they were old hands at it. And of course soon thereafter started pooping like crazy as well! I haven't had chicks since I was a...

Will my chicks be okay for 2 days in shipping box?

Yay! I called the PO a little while ago and they have already been put on my mailman's truck and out for delivery (although I would have preferred to go pick them up). The next two hours are going to seem like a week before they get here! I'll post some pictures of hopefully four healthy chicks...

Will my chicks be okay for 2 days in shipping box?

I ordered a small order of four chicks from Meyer that was shipped yesterday 3/10. I waited all day for my chicks to arrive and about 4:00 when the mailman came and went with no chicks and no call from the post office , I called Meyer to make sure they were shipped. She said yes, they were...

    Coop door size?

If it's cut in the floor then the size will be different than the 'normal' type cut in the wall. Width would be the same -- I'd say 8" as a minimum, more would be more comfortable, esp. if you want big things like Orps -- but the length will have to be greater to allow for head clearance as the...
