    Sex & Food

So, I have 24 chickens - 8 roosters and 16 hens. Definitely going to reluctantly cull 5 or 6 of the roosters, and may get a few more hens. I have a (French) Bresse supplier, which are supposed to be the finest meat birds on planet Earth. 3 roos and a hen at the moment. A variety of other birds -...

    Poop boards

In the winter, I tend to throw a lot of it directly onto the garden beds and under the fruit and nut trees. The rest of the year, it goes into the compost.

    Poop boards

Yup! I put a few hooks on the wall, where I keep the metal paint scraper, chisel, hammer, and hand broom.

    Poop boards

Just wanted to post my upgrade to the poop board/litter box system. I tried sand for the floor substrate for about a year, and found it really messy and difficult to clean regularly. I even used a snow shovel with about 500 drill holes for scooping. Huge pain. Poop boards beneath the perches -...

    Injured Rooster

I have ventilation under the entire roof between the walls and joists, so I think just generally humid winter cold was the culprit. He’s all healed up now. 🙂

    Injured Rooster

It got down into the high teens a few nights ago. Never had that problem before (even at closer to zero degrees). Then again, his wattle is huge.

    Injured Rooster

Hello! I have two groups of birds (March 2020 and September 2020), and the alpha roo (a French Bresse) from the older batch suddenly, yesterday, was covered in blood from his wattle down his cape. I’m not aware of any predators. He is the largest bird by a decent margin - the other Roos his age...

    Hen Issues

We tried saddles but they kept pulling them off, mysteriously. Any particular brands you recommend? TY!

    Hen Issues

Looking for suggestions for several injured hens. I have a flock (hatched in March 2020) with 4 roosters and 8 hens. I know: too many roos! I really don’t want to get rid of any of my roosters - they’re beautiful, healthy, and do a good job protecting and keeping general order. 4 of the hens...

    Chick Litter - Yesterday’s News?

Fortunately, the sunroom seals off from the rest of the house. So no dust inside - except on my wife’s plants! I bought a brooder (cozy coop) and the chicks will go out today!

    Chick Litter - Yesterday’s News?

I would LOVE to get them outside ASAP. We even have a separate coop for them, with an enclosed run beneath. But we don’t want them to die - they were pricier chicks (Blue Buff Colombian Orpingtons, French/American Bresse, Lavender Marans...). Looks like low 80s for highs and upper 50s for...

    Chick Litter - Yesterday’s News?

Any thoughts on this? Wood shavings/chips were WAY too dusty (we keep our hatchlings in the sunroom for the first 6 weeks).

Almost Finished with the New Coop!

Will update my info! Thanks for the suggestion. A few folks have said they used it on wood trailers for towing drag cars, and no problems through the seasons. Let the experiment begin. 😁 Located in Oxford, Ohio - about an hour north of Cincinnati.

Almost Finished with the New Coop!

I’m curious to see how the epoxy ages also. I sealed the floors so there shouldn’t be any moisture coming up from underneath. I’ve seen people use this in kennels, and it’s used on boats.

Almost Finished with the New Coop!

I used a really strong mesh gutter guard for ventilation in about 10 linear feet of soffit, and sealed the others with plywood.

Almost Finished with the New Coop!

Couldn’t wait to post! Frankly, I’m too exhausted and annoyed at what tedious stuff I have left (window/door trim, caulking) to finish this week. Our flock is currently 19 - looking like 7 Roos and 12 hens. The coop has 8 nesting boxes in case we get a few more chickens. It’s about 100 square...

    DIY Chicken Feed

I’ve read so much conflicting info about this, my head is starting to spin. I saw a video someone posted in which she raved about years of making her own chicken feed from bulk ingredients: cleaned oats (50%), cracked corn (25%), black oil sunflower seed (25%), and a small scoop of diatomaceous...

    Chicks Graduating to Outdoors

Wondering if folks have strong opinions about the temperature and age requirements for moving these birds into their coop. There are 19 of them, and they’re about 4 1/2 weeks old. The container they’re in is getting crowded, and the new “much bigger” coop isn’t ready yet (I’m still building -...

    Sourcing Chickens?

Hello! I’m really new to this, but want to learn more about where to source my birds. I got a dozen from a friend a few years ago, but she’s not selling. I’m wondering about other good breeds for my area (just north of Ohio River valley), and if there are any reputable breeders out there. We’re...
