Does anyone know where I can get some butterfly chicken saddles? It has to be the butterfly kind becasue of where the roo wears off a circle of feathers off my hens. I have some, but let one of my girls hatch out some chicks so I need more. Louise does not seem to be doing it anymore!! I can't...
Thank you! :). The saddle is because of rooster boy. He is breaking feathers... but it took him awhile to do it. He is not doing it on purpose. He is a pretty good boy otherwise, I hear they can sometimes cause some significant damage. He took on a Great Dane!! The Dane had no intentions in...
OK thank you... I have had chickens for 6 years now and I have never seen feather loss like this for molting!! Exp when she lost them all overnight. I guess she is just a crazy molter. I feel like a noob now lol
It happened over night, just the breasts on her, and perfectly naked... like a plucked chicken. She has molted before and it never looked like this. Plus I have the other hen with the same thing just a lot more. No one else is doing it and they are all the same age.
Something ripped a very large amount of feathers out of one of my hens. I am not sure what it was, there is a lot missing from around the neck, the back, the breast, and her but. Now a would imagine a predator would have been able to kill her since there is so much gone from the neck. Not only...
Ok good. its been 2 weeks and she raised the others since they are just a day or so old. She is the mom. That makes me feel better. i am just gonna give it a few more days till I know she is healed. The thing is she is avoiding them like the plague so I hope she just gets over it. Maybe she is...
Ok so a while back my hen was injured. Now either she cut herself (quite badly) on a window or it was the rooster. There was 2 slices the same length and the same width part So I don't really think it was him as the rest of the girls are fine. Now I had to take her and put her in a dog crate in...
OK I will, though i suspect your being really sarcastic. If not then I am truly sorry. With my BSL I bought some balls from the dollar store. I place 9 balls on her nest, she then laid 6 and then sat on them got that 1000 yard stare and would not move off the nest. I bought some chicks waited...
I have had lots of good luck getting a hen to go broody. I got my BSL and then my RIR.. but I think it will be quite challenge get 7 broody hens. I know at least the RIR will she will go broody at the drop of a dime.. or egg I should say lol. Good to know they will keep at 60 for 10 days...
I have a few questions about allowing y hens to hatch their own eggs.
1) Can I just let the hens lay until they go broody one their own? Or do I have to collect them make them go broody and then stick all the eggs under her/them? I know its about 12-14 eggs they will want to set on... so that...
Back in the spring I ordered a straight tun of 12 black sex links. Was sent 13 and ended up with 7 Roos. I planned on keeping one and sending the rest off to freezer camp Yesterday we did 3, and today we did 3. It was not as easy as all those you tube vids but DH is learning how to do the cut...
Thank you! I will definitely come back in the spring to post about it! I have plenty of time to research which I love to do. The first time I did it it was with a black sex link (MB which stood for mean *****) The second time I did it was with my RIR. The RIR (her name is Red) will go broody at...
Yes I know the chicks will be an odd mix. I tricked mine into going broody, by adding 9 colored balls from the dollar store. She then laid 6 eggs and would not come off the nest. She was turning those "eggs" ! it was funny becasue they were diff colors on one side versus the other, so she had 3...
OK So I ma pretty new to this. I have had a few laying hens for few years. The 2 times I have gotten more Chicks/layers I just tricked mom into thinking she hatched a bunch of chicks (got her good n broody first). This time I ended up with 7 Roos. I will be saving one so my girls can have some...
