I see lots about incubators but I don't see much about hatching under a mama hen. I have a light brahma that decided she wanted to set a nest. So we've let her. I'm worried about her though. She doesn't seem to be getting off the nest to eat or drink at all. I'm also worried she's just going to...
That's kind of what we were thinking. We're hoping to keep one roo at least so we'll have incubatable chicks for next season. But...we've got some dorking roos so I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world if the barred rock turns out to suck. Hmmm..
I could, but we wanted them for meat so I'm not worried about that part. They're not the best meat birds...but we were trying for good all purpose birds which is why we wanted the barred rocks to keep. Why do you ask about selling them?
Hi all!
I've got about 21 birds that we're slaughtering starting today. The goal is to get it down to 3. (two hens and one roo) I've picked out the three that I find friendliest/prettiest and easiest to manage but a friend of ours is insisting we're not going to be happy with our choices.
I...
Oh he is gorgeous! We have no need of a roo as we've got six to choose from ourselves! Otherwise I'd totally offer to take him off your hands. Hopefully this "bump" will help you out in any case.
I've got some birds and this is our second season of butchering birds. Last year we had cornish crosses and we were so worried that we were going to butcher too early that we ended up waiting too long and they were REALLY fatty!! (even though they were pasture raised. Lazy birds..)
This year...
Hi all!
I'm not thinking of showing seriously at all just at the local fair, but I'd like to have a chance at a ribbon of course! So where should I start? What do they look for? Is it like dog shows where they look for the breed standard? Does it have anything to do with personality? My birds...
Hmmm. They're only 6 weeks old so...probably got a while then! It was my understanding that the only difference between layer feed and baby mash was more protien and/or more calcium?
My pullets are fully feathered out now and look like miniture adult birds. I have five adult laying hens that I'd like to move my cockrols and pullets in with but I know that there would be no keeping them from eachother's feed. So how soon is soon enough to move them down with the adults?
I was worried that they wouldn't be good. I check the crack very carefully and if it's small enough I'll put it in the fridge and try to use it quickly. Thus far there hasn't been a problem so...I'd say...proceed with caution! There have been some where I think the crack is too big so I just...
...shell mixed into their food and a secondary bowl of it on the side. I just don't understand! I've got five girls and we get 2 cracked eggs a day. Again, it's just tiny little hair line cracks but if I'm not really gentle with the egg *I* end up breaking the darn thing! Driving me crazy. Thoughts?
I've had my five girls for nearly a year now. We just got 21 baby birds and they're growing nicely. They're up to about 4-5 weeks old now and they think they're big tough birds! So I took a few of my baby birds down to see the big hens. The baby birds started to run and try to follow the adult...
Sounds just like my girls. Except my big girls are SCARED of the little ones!!! It's pretty darn funny actually... except for when they throw all the bedding out of the boxes. This is driving me crazy because the eggs on hard wood crack easier. I hope someone has some answers for ya because I'd...
...2 liter bottles filled with water that we froze. I showed the girls how to lay on them so they could cool off. I haven't seen them use them yet. *sigh* So I brought down a misting hose that we have and set it up to mist them off. They stayed in the furthest corner away from it!! So I took it...
*whew* It's almost done!! Hooray! Just a few last things and it will be totally done. It still needs:
One more roof support
Another coat of outter paint
A few coats of inner paint
The bottom half of the door
All the hardware.
Here's the pictures as of today:
The front
One side
The back and...
As long as I get at least one hen of each breed I'm fine. Though I'd really rather not deal with that many roos until it's time to ready them for the freezer.
I just got 21 day old chicks and would like them to have a mama. So I brought one of my prone to broody behavior-birds and she freaked out! They scared her so badly she had to squak and run away at top speed!!!! HA. I've got another girl who I introduced to the chicks and you could see it all...
