I have a sussex hen (I purchased her as a sussex hen but she in appearance is an extra large production cross). She's over 10 lbs and just gigantic. We called her Jurassic chicken as she was as large as a rooster. Today she just dropped dead. This morning she was bullying the others for...
This is long and I'm sorry. I have a question, I recently posted in the predator thread because after 4 years of blissfully owning chickens, I have a predator problem and a disease problem. My speckled sussex was killed a couple of weeks ago while I was in the shower. My girls free range in my...
Thanks everyone for your input. I am leaning towards a Hawk after everyone's thoughts and am thinking how I can make the girls safer. They just range in my back yard during the day. This is a photo of Pepper taken this fall before she filled out for the winter. She was a really pretty and had...
the head is still there, but from breast to head, she has been stripped of feathers and skin. I could see breast muscle and the neck muscles and it was a bloody mess up by her head. Her head though was still attached. Feathers were all around the corpse but the skin is gone with pieces of skin...
I lost a hen this morning. She was my 8 month old speckled sussex hen. Beautiful little bird, very sweet disposition. Anyway, I found her at 10am and am trying to work back to TOD and probable cause to figure out how I can proceed with management.
I am not sure how anyone feels about graphic...
Thanks, I will. By good layer, I mean she was/is consistent. I had another hen who was a nicer hen but she would not lay consistently. So Thank you. I am going to keep a couple more of this set of babies and then give away both of them today.
...to a friend with an aviary along with some of the 4 week olds I'm not keeping). I hesitate to do it because the hen is a good layer. They are just so **** skittish, I'm afraid that will rub off on the new ones.
Should I just say goodbye to these two? It's really no fun trying to handle them
You can purchase them online. I got a mixed bunch of eggs from a friend and have a couple of silvers in there. I love surprise eggs (I have one that's a light silvery yellow but has faint gray striping where an italian chick would have the black stripes - can't wait to see how that one feathers...
I have heard that you should not feed quail the medicated chick starter. A friend said she did that and they started to die. Could have been failure to thrive but I don't have enough experience and am not willing to experiment.
Also, if they are deformed at all, they rarely get better.

I had this happen to me, it won't hurt to wait. I waited on my last hatch and only one out of 10-15 eggs hatched so I picked up a couple of chicks on Craigslist to keep him company. He hatched late, I think day 18 and I waited the others out until day 22
so cute! and it's not a couple of weeks, it's a couple of days maybe. At two weeks it should have feathers. They are fully feathered by about 4 weeks. Did you find out what kind?
There was a thread somewhere on here about venting babies and I can't find it now. I was hoping to get some insight. i seem to only be able to hatch males.
I'm trying to get the hang of sexing quail and trying to figure out the vent sexing. I have got it down pat on 5 weeks and older but can't for the life of me get it younger. Hoping someone here can guide me. I have three chicks (two older hens, and a young pair also). I am probably going to...
Is there a best way to introduce new quail? I hatched some quail and kept 3. A grayish tuxedo female and a light red and gray male in wild pattern. I don't know the names of the colors but that's what they look like. He has pinkish/red and gray/silver feathers down his back. Since he came from...
if only I had a stick long enough, it's in the center and I can't reach it. Wondering if it was the CO2 from the dry ice that flushed it out or if it has eaten poison this week and is dying. Either way the hens are put away until I can recover a body. I don't want it to crawl out and they get...
so if a rat is out during the day....that means it's sick right? The rat was laying just under the edge of the shed and I thought it might be dead so I took a stick to pull it out and it woke up and crawled back under the shed. Now it's in the center of the shed where I can't reach it.
I...
They aren't the same age, I wouldn't have tried it until they were mature. I would have tried Artichoke (who is 5 weeks) and miracle chick (who is 2 weeks but not until he was at least 5-6 weeks). If I should not mix coveys, I'm Ok with that. I'll just need to find someone who wants the extra...
