It's my first time with BCM, how do we feel about my almost 6 week "pullet" on the front/right? The comb is the same size as the other 2 but I noticed a little red this morning.
I know it's not the best angle, but what are your thoughts...are my 5 1/2 week pullets actually pullets? The silver acts very Roo-ish, his comb is slightly bigger and maybe a slight pink compared to the golden. He's bigger than the golden too. I've heard people comment on color patterns. Guesses...
I recently rehomed my Roo because he started coming at me...I can't have that with 2 toddlers in the yard. I don't plan on a new Roo, but if one of my babies ends up being so I will definately be willing to give it a try again. It makes sense that he would be better mannered being raised in a...
That's where my concern stemmed from. Having not seen a hen raise chicks I thought she was a little harsh and mean. I guess in reality she's teaching them to survive and care for themselves, after all they only have a few short weeks to learn from her. I'm excited to watch the process, even if...
Haha. We get so caught up on following the "book", 95 degrees the first week 90 the second...the babies are a couple days old and were fine wandering around Momma in 70 degrees.
I'm realizing I may spoil and baby my chickens a little too much. Talk about tough love! Lol. I sat, very anxious, watching them go in tonight. Again she went on in and sat in there calling for a good 15-20 minutes while the frantic chicks looked around for Momma. So sad. As bad as I wanted I...
In short, I got my first flock last year, all chicks I raised up. I had one rooster and planned to hatch eggs this year if I had a broody. Unfortunately it became necessary to rehome my Roo before I had a broody, so I incubated eggs while I still had access to his fertile eggs...I wanted to see...
I only got my first flock last March. I knew I wanted to try and hatch but I wasn't getting any broody action. I had to rehome my Roo and knew I wanted chicks so I used my father in laws incubator while I still had fertile eggs. Half way through incubation Bernice went broody!!
Got Ya. In my research I've decided it's easiest to let her raise them in the coop with the flock. Right now they are in a dog crate on the coop floor. I figured when the time is right I would open the door and let her decide when she wants to introduce them. But I also worry about them going up...
Lots of firsts for me. Incubated eggs for the first time, they hatched yesterday. I have my first broody, Bernice, from my first flock(last year). And I slipped a few chicks under her today and removed the eggs. Excited!!
She is a Barred Rock. Unfortunately I only have room to keep 3, my friend is taking the rest. I did go out this evening and carefully was able to get the eggs removed and chicks under her. Praying for her to do good and to find happy healthy chicks when I check in the morning.
