Hello all!
Gosh, it's been a while. Seems I only come on when I have issues and questions. Well, looks like we will be losing one of our two hens to egg yolk peritonitis. I don't know how soon, but I'm already panicking about putting her down ourselves. She's only 1.5 years old but hasn't...
Thanks Jeremy. I try to eat organic as much as possible so, while I haven't decided for certain whether I'll persue feeding the hens organic (since they get so many organic kitchen scraps and garden treats), I like to keep my options open. Do you reccomend against it?
...you guys being ready to help. We often feel alone in our mini-homesteading adventures...it's nice to feel a sense of community. I will be looking to you all in the near future to purchase a (*female!!!*) pullet or two to flesh out our soon-to-be pair.
And now for a very unpleasant...
Hi B.A. BYC...I have a sad and difficult problem
I've been very much M.I.A since I joined and I have a good reason: all is NOT well in Chickenland. My earlier doubts about Eggberta (my "95% surely a hen" sexed Brahma) being an Eggbert turned out to be, beyond a doubt, true.
Moreover, he is...

I wouldn't know to be worried about that except that a) she was the...
...and Nestlé (H.E.N!) from a local feed store. Henrietta is a PBR, Eggberta is a light brahma and I'm scared that she's a he, and Nestle is *supposedly* and Ameraucana but may be an EE (I hope she's an Am though!).
My husband and I moved to the bay area a year and a half ago from Chicago...
Hello from the bay area (via Illinois)! I'm really missing the Midwestern autumn colors right about now! And cheese curds, to think I was ever only an hour's drive from Wisconsin cheese curds
Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone! Golly, I have to meet my posting quota so I can post about photos of our Light Brahma who, I fear, is a cockrel. It's been smooth sailing up til now but oh boy, this will be a doozie!
As for the home search, we're looking into rehabbing a dilapidated...
Oh my gosh! You're coop looks SO much like mine (plus a few though). I too have a dark little barred rock (you've got several it looks like), an ameraucana AND a light brahma whose gender I'm worried about and will be posting on in just a few! We are chicken soulmates....golly!
