    Bloody poop

My pullets are now all about 20 weeks old and laying their first eggs. (We have Barred Rocks 6 hens and 2 roos - 1 delaware hen - 1 RI white hen and 1 lavender cochi hen. They were all raised together with me on medicated chick starter for cocci. One of them (not sure which one) has blood in...

Who to keep and who to eat?

Thanks Mrs K for your reply. As it is, my new small eggs aren't good to try to hatch anyway so I guess my cochin can take her time to get broody. I will be looking forward to having some chicks next year!!!

egg pic and a few questions! *UPDATE*

I couldn't tell by the photos but what color earlobes does your cochin have. Maybe one of them is not a purebred? After another look at the photos, what color are the RIR earlobes. I had first thought they were white but now I am not sure.

egg pic and a few questions! *UPDATE*

Sorry, I didn't realize your RIR was a bantam. They will always lay small eggs. A standard RIR lays above average sized eggs Also the color of the egg is based on the color of the earlobe, not the comb. Cochins have red earlobes, therefore their eggs will be brown "tinted yellowy brown". As...

I think we have a rooster - now what

I am a newbee at this but I have read that if you do not want your rooster to crow early in the morning, you can keep him in a pen that is not tall enough for him to stretch his neck up to crow. Just be sure to let him out in the morning when it is OK for him to start crowing. I have two...

egg pic and a few questions! *UPDATE*

I am new to this too but I have done a lot of reading. Your RIR has white earlobes so she will lay white eggs. I have a RIW with red earlobes that lays brown eggs. The cochins lay a tinted or yellowy brown color egg usually but I can't see the color of her earlobes in the picture. Here is a...

Who to keep and who to eat?

Thanks for your replies. Ridgerunner, thank you for confirming my thought of eating the less meaty chickens and saving the meaty ones to produce a better flock. At first I was thinking I would want to eat the meatier ones and then realized that I would be better of keeping them to pass their...

    Self dusting laying eggs

I am very new to chickens with my first backyard flock raised from chicks this spring. I was interested in this post because I recently dusted my hens and now, at least one of them has started laying eggs. Is it safe to eat the eggs when they have been exposed to dusting powder? My daughter...

Who to keep and who to eat?

Well, first let me say hello everyone. I am new to chickens this spring but have been reading, reading, reading all of this mass of information and wonderful advice but I haven’t quite found the answer to my questions. The majority of my hens are almost 19 weeks of age (6 Barred Rocks) with...
