Setting my eggs tonight (April 10) Any tips?

I'm setting a doz tonight from leghorns, red sexlinks. The rooster is a red/white cross but he is smallish and his sister lays small cream colored eggs, so not sure if the offspring will lay nice sized eggs or small ones. Hopefully big, as the lady we are going to give the chicks to sells her...

    Eggs all over and more...help

We had the same problem for awhile so I bought the oyster shell and was giving them a little at a time. They pick all the large pieces out and then leave the dust. I thought that they didn't want anymore because of all the stuff still in the bowl, but the soft eggs continued. So, now I...

3 hens... 5 eggs... 6 hours... is this even possible!

We had something weird happent the other day. My husband came in first thing in the morning with 11 eggs. I said, "wow!, 11 this early in the morning!". Later around supper he went out to shut the coop for the night and said, "You've got to see this!" and then he pulled out 8 more eggs from...

One hen lays only rubber eggs, had to pull broken one out of her!

Yes, thanks. I did search through the posts and I did give her a tums and some cod liver oil. I have been mixing some of the oyster shell into the feed, but maybe I should put in a little more. Wish me and her luck!

One hen lays only rubber eggs, had to pull broken one out of her!

I did give her cod liver oil the first day in the house, I think I will go out and get some vitamins for their water. I think that would be the easiest way to medicate her. Thanks for the tip!

One hen lays only rubber eggs, had to pull broken one out of her!

Glad to know I'm not the only one with a chronic rubber egg layer. I realize that they are perfectly edible and that it is common in young birds, but I don't know if she has ever laid a hard shelled egg since she started laying over a month ago. I do think it is a problem if they continue to...

One hen lays only rubber eggs, had to pull broken one out of her!

She is only about 7 months old and has been laying for about a month now. I am still hoping that she will straighten out in time. I am just not going to mention the rubber eggs to my husband and he will forget about her I don't plan on incubating these eggs, so no worries there. I'm just...

One hen lays only rubber eggs, had to pull broken one out of her!

I have one hen out of 6 that are laying that produces only rubber eggs. They have oyster shell available at all times. The others have nice hard eggs. This hen has always been a bit different, a runt and slow to develop. Yesterday she was looking sickly and a mess on her backside with feces...

    Really expensive Egg

Sure are lots of cheaper ways. We should have just sectioned off a part of our large barn that we just us for storage, would have been sooooo much less expensive. I sell my eggs on ebay too, but they never go that high (I wish!)

    Really expensive Egg

You don't pay unless your item sells, it's funny really, I can totally relate, I spent more than that on our 13 hens and 1 rooster plus coop and everything else I bought for them. I'm watching them, what would be funnier if they actually found a buyer!

How bad do chicken coops stink?

Thanks Chooks for the brand name, time to go shopping. As for the droppings board / table, it doesn't get dirty at all as the sand protects the wetter ones from sticking. My floor is totally poop free as well with all the shavings protecting the linoleum. Actually, the dirtiest part of the...

How bad do chicken coops stink?

Our roost is above the nesting boxes also. I have a double roost with a 3 foot wide table top above the nests to protect them. I emptied a bag of fine sand and mixed in some DE to help wick away the moisture from the droppings. Every 2-3 days I go out and scoop out the solids with a kitty...
