I had a broody hatch 2 chicks about 10 days ago, and another hatched 4 yesterday. Today the first mama hen had two of the new chicks following her around and was cornering the new mama hen and trying to take the other two. I tried to separate them but she first keeps going back to collect the...
Next batch is hatching out today, 3 are out and the 4th pipped early this morning.
After the last ones hatched out, I waited until that night and moved them to a lower box that I expanded and put food and water in. Mama hen stayed with the chickies and has been a great mom to them. By day 3 the...
My flock has started growing on its own now, I gave in to a hen that was determined to go broody and yesterday two little mutts hatched into this world. Potentially 4 more in another week with another hen that decided she had to one up the first broody too, but I won't count those until they...
First one hatched! Saw the pip this morning and suspected it would be out when I got home. Second has piped so should out soon :) so happy to have chicks!
Another one of my hens went broody :/ a RIR this time. I just let her keep the 4 eggs she sat on all day, at least she seems smart enough to go back to the same nest lol. The first one was on the wrong one again this evening, I caught it before the eggs got too cool.
Is bloodiness contagious or...
Just wanted to say that two of the three eggs are in fact doing well, candled them tonight and could see the chicks moving inside 2. The 3rd looks like it quit on day 4-5 based on candling pics on here. (Today is day 9)
I have to say it was so hot here today the eggs don't really need mama hen...
I have an australorp that insisted on going broody, it had been trying off and on for weeks. Finally I gave it 3 eggs on June 10th, and it's been sitting on them since. The other day I found it had changed nests, and was off the eggs for long enough for them to get cold. I moved her back to the...
Subtraction occurred today, sold 7 brown leghorn cockerels back to the feed store. DW is mad we didn't get any pullets out of that batch, and is now demanding more chicks lol.
Current count: 32 chickens (not counting 4 Cornish Crosses due for processing in two weeks) and 3 turkeys.
Feed store...
Some updated pics, now just over 3 weeks old. I can't beleive how fast these guys are growing. I got a handful of Cornish cross and leghorns at the same time, it's amazing the spread in sizes.
#1 (escaped the brooder today, found it perched up on some shelves in the garage)

Well I failed to do chicken math correctly yesterday when I posted. I now have 3 turkeys, 8 CXs, and 4 leghorns too. Total count: 39. LOL
Reminds me of some saying, it goes like "don't count your chickens before they hatch"
Oh yeah, and the feed store is going to have peachicks, I might have...
Hey all, I am just getting into turkeys and picked up two today. They appear to be less than a week old, and the shop proprietor had no idea what breeds they were. Any help IDing these guys would be greatly appreciated, as well as some tips for starting out.
Still reading through all the...
New adventures in chicken math! I have expanded as of today into turkey math! +2 :D Now that my 22 layers are all producing nicely, I figured it's time to add another angle. Picking up 6 Cornish cross tomorrow as a test run for meat birds, although I'm sending my wife to pick them up so she may...
I have been sitting on these guys for 18 weeks now, resisting the urge to post them here. I kinda suspect 2 of being cockerels, but I'm not experienced with the rose comb or the breed so I'm still not sure.

You seem to be lost ;) This thread is about enabling each other and helping to rationalize more chickens!
sadly, I'm down another one today. DW's attachment to our children is stronger than the attachment to the little feathered guy that chased my little guy across the yard. That was his third...
I decided to re-evaluate my chicken solution to get a better total yesterday. After subtracting 1 who decided freezer camp would be more fun than the coop, I now only count 8 chickens...
My three Roos (who can't go anywhere due to the DW's attachment), and 5 laying pullets.
Sure, I have 8 more...
Facinating discussion in this thread, love hearing what people are doing with the breed.
I posted a picture of my Del cockerel in early July, he sure has come a long way since then. And he is still king of the coop for sure. Here's an updated pic, now 30 weeks old.
