My big ol' chickens won't go in the coop!

All I can say is good luck! A stubborn hen will die that way. Personally when I get new hens I lock them up in the coop (closed) for a few days until they understand that is home. When I do let them out some DO try to avoid the coop, but the majority follow the others back in at night.

Will pullets begin laying in winter?

I would introduce lighting on a timer to suppliment missed laying hours if you really need them to start laying now. If you are just curious and can take your time, then let them be. Down time is good time. :)

    new poultry mama

Just a normal coop should be good enough. There are lots of designs. I tend to throw in a extra bale of hay in the winter for extra insolation. Be sure the roof can withstand rain/snow. Add a cheap tarp if needed. Good luck!

Taking care of Chicks hatched in cold weather

I think the mamma will do a better job than anything else, but if you worry you can always put a heat lamp in and see if they use it. Chances they won't.

New member tired of store bought food...

I know how you feel. I recently moved back to the US after living in Europe for some 16 years, and the quality of meat for sale is.. well.. GROSS. So now I'm raising my own food and feeling much better.
