Back story:
A few nights ago I was woken up to my 6 hen flock (two Delawares, two Barred Rock, two Red Laced Blue Wyandottes) going crazy in our large sideyard. There was an opossum in the yard that had just attacked one of them (a Delaware) and she (the hen) was limping. I killed the opossum...
I'm having the same issues!! my chickens hate hate hate bedding in their coop... what does the cumin do? Can you still eat the egg? I would hate to waste it...
Three of my hens stated laying last week and I'm not sure why either (I've been giving them oyster shells for a month now and the eggs they are laying aren't soft) but some of the eggs I'm getting are cracked on the top/bottom... not like a peck-hole but more like an impact crack as it was laid...
"Can you grab me a bail of straw on the way back from the grocery store?"
"We should leave (the party) early, we need to count the chickens and close the coop door."
"Chickens are so smart!"
"I went to the store to get three chicks but came home with ten because its better if they're even...

(S)He's a bit bigger than the other EE's... definitely the leader of the flock. I bought her at a feed store and they said that all their chicks are sexed as female from the hatchery but "they make no guarantees". What do you guys think? When do males start crowing? I hope for (her)his sake...
I heard you should have four square feet for each chicken... you have 64 square feet with your 8x8 coop... which means you can house 16 chickens. But that's just what I heard...
I made a makeshift pen and put my babies (4 Delawares and 3 Australorps) outside since it was such a nice day here!

I bought them mainly for egg laying.... and I do really love making soup... hahahaha!! I think I'll wait until they stop laying from old age, or if one isnt getting along with the others, or until I get a roo... (i'm not allowed to have a rooster in my neighborhood)...
