    bald bottom, seems swollen

Well I am sorry to report that the chicken passed away last night. Drawing out the fluid made her happy for a couple of days, but did not resolve the problem. Yesterday she stopped eating and this morning she was gone.

    bald bottom, seems swollen

Well a few days later, I washed her but today she took a turn for the worse. Wings drooping. Same balloon in her rear abdomen. Luckily I keep some odd things around the house so I had a huge syringe, took out 80cc of yellow fluid. She seems relieved but I doubt she will survive another day...

    bald bottom, seems swollen

one of my hens has lost the feathers on her bottom, and when I touch it, her bottom area seems swollen, as if it's filled with fluid. Strange. She's about a year old. She seems otherwise healthy, eats. She had some poop stuck there a few days ago, I soaked her in warm water and washed her off...

Topic of the Week - Winter Egg Laying

Well I have 10 chickens and I only get 1 egg a day. I wish it were a bit more. My hens are almost three years old. A few Buff Orpingtons, a few Americaunas, a few Barred Rock. They're very sweet. I do supplement light so we get 14 hours a day. I live near San Francisco, so it's not...

My chickens go crazy for dollar store bird seed

I like to give my chickens a little snack from time to time. A little crust left over from my breakfast, the compost, carrot peels. But they just go crazy for this bag of wild bird seed I got at the dollar store. Two pounds for 99 cents. The main ingredient is milo, which I believe is sorghum...

    The war on roost mites

Thanks for reading my post. I am also a greenie, but I draw the line when my hens are so uncomfortable, and the mites bit the hell out of me too! One pyrethrin bomb. One treatment of Sevin powder dusted all over the coop, and a bit on each chickens underside. All seems well in the coop now...

strange texture of eggshell, sandy? PIC

Things are going well in my coop. Ten hens, most of them two years old, three of them one year old. I got an egg with a strange, sandy finish on it yesterday. Strange. I don't get this often. Just thought I'd post it.

    The war on roost mites

...up tightly and fired off the first bomb. Then I went back and dusted the whole coop, and dusted all the chickens on the bottom and under the wings. I think it's getting under control. Whew. Thank you backyardchickens for being such a great resource. I hope this **** itching gets better soon!

    what are these tiny insects?

Okay, conclusion: MITES About a week ago my chickens stopped going into the coop at night to roost. The mysterious little insects are quite numerous in the cracks of the coop. And they bite me! Caused a little rash on my arm. And although I didn't find them in the bedding on the floor of the...

    what are these tiny insects?

I just notices a zillion tiny little bugs on the door of my chicken coop. They seem to be smaller than a normal flea. I will look under a magnifying glass to get a better idea. Are these the dreaded mites?? I checked my chickens and they don't seem to have any rash or bites or anything weird...

Egg laying reduced with new bird addition

I had seven hens, and was getting about four eggs a day. Neighbor gave me her three hens. Now with ten hens I'm getting about two eggs a day. Introduction seem to be going well. Plenty of space. My chicken run is 50 feet long and 15 feet wide. Plenty of space for them to avoid confrontation...

So far so good, assimilating a new young hen to my flock

I have a nice little flock of six hens, all 18 months old. They starting molting, the days got shorter and I was only getting one egg per day (total, from six hens). So I was strolling through my local feed store and saw a cute little three month old hen for $16. I took her home, put her on the...

Is it normal: my 18 month old hens stopped laying?

Just went to the feed store, bought 20% pellets. Also put a light bulb in the coop with a timer. Will add light in the morning gradually. Thank you all for your good advice.

Will a chicken lay in an egg box if there is already an egg in it?

My chickens all lay in the same nesting. Box. I go away for a few days and find four eggs in the one nest.

Is it normal: my 18 month old hens stopped laying?

I got my hens as chicks in April, a year and a half ago. Up until June they were laying 5 eggs a day. Six hens. Two Buff Orpington, two Auracauna, two Barred Rock. Now I get one egg a day. Northern California, the days are in the 70's, night maybe around 50 degrees. I feed them the same...
