It's been a couple of years since I last logged on here, after my poor babies were taken by the fox...but of course I couldn't stay away for long! Had 3 eggs in our little bator for 3 weeks, and they are now pipping!!!
It's been a while, and our last hatchlings a few years back needed help, so...
Oh my!!!!!!
These girls have blown me away!
They roosted in their box/laundry basket all night, and left me a lovely big egg by way of thanks!
Then I thought that as they're so advanced and on the ball, I'd put them in their shed to see how they got on. The were scratching, preening...
Well this is just a quicky to let you know about our ex-bats!
Our new ladies are here:- Valerie, Maggie, Pearl and Ivy!
We're utterly amazed at them! After all the research I've done into battery hens I think I was expecting to get 4 bald, scabby reclusive birds......but instead, we've got 4...
You have my utmost sympathy! I was convinced mine were wobbling about 4 days early last year......in the end I wound up staying up for 3 days sitting next to the bator until the process was complete! They can wiggle for days if you watch them hard enough!
Mine was a tiny little bator though...
Thanks for your help!
They will be going into the shed (Peckingham Palace) where they will have the options of where to lay or roost. There is plenty of bedding, ground level nesting baskets or higher platforms for when they feel ready to venture upwards! I've put little ramps in to help as I...
I just called a nearby egg farm (was told NOT to mention "battery" or "rescuing"!) and asked to buy a few! They don't really care who buys them once their laying year is up, so will usually spare a few!
Not sure how the system works with you guys....you could give it a try!

Oh thank you guys!
I don't have the means or expertise to go trapping a fox.....I don't think my neighbours and I are as rural as most of you! My chickens are the nearest thing to country living I've experienced! The only thing I can really do (and have been doing dilligently) Is to...
I was excited before.....but now I'm almost weeing myself!!!!!
Can't wait to choose my girls....that's the hard part....having to leave the others behind :-(
I don't have room for more than a few, but maybe you'd be kind enough to direct any interested potential Yorkshire rescuers to me for...
Thank you Highlander!
I'm reading up on everything, and preparing the coop. I don't expect them to behave like "normal" chickens and am ready for the effort and challenges!
I'm still devastated by the loss of my babies and caring for some needy hens will help ease the pain!

Awwwww I WANT ONE!
Getting my ex-bats in a few days, I reckon my Daughter and me will be smitten by all the ugly little "oven readies"! As far as I'm concerned, the grosser looking the better!
It's cool to be different!
High five for adopting him!

Ooops! My mistake!
Thank you for correcting that!
Just been out to finish clearing out Peckingham Palace! Want it to be perfect for them, but I suppose anything would seem like paradise after living in a cage the size of a piece of paper!
Many more thanks guys

Ours is the garden shed which was in our garden when we moved in! It got battered in some bad English weather and my Daughter's toys were ruined so I had the brainwave to turn it into a chicken coop!
My Daughter and I scrounged up wood, nails, paint, etc etc and ripped out all the unecessary...
Am loving this positive response! Thanks Guys!
There is a charity in England called Battery Hen Welfare Trust which perform nationwide battery rescues. You register your details, contact the local co-ordinator then turn up on the allotted day to recieve your hens! They are usually 1 year old...
I can't leave it any longer.......am off to rescue a few battery hens from a local battery farm.
As you may know, my own beautiful little birds were killed last week leaving me distraught, and whilst I'll never replace them, they were special-we raised them from eggs-I need to have some...
Thank you so much for your lovely messages!
I should have know all along to rely on you guys for the understanding and sympathy! Normal friends don't quite get it, it takes a certain kind of person to dig us crazy, eccentric chicken lovers!
I do try to teach Alexandra about the laws of nature...
Thank you!
Mercifully, the carnage wasn't too bad. Just feathers and a tiny amount of blood. Have seen much worse on here! And my chickens have occasionally inflicted more blood shed on each other!
We think the fox carried them away.
Miss them so much! Raised them from eggs and loved them...
After sadly losing my beloved flock to a fox recently, I have decided to rescue 2 or 3 ex-battery hens to come and live with us this spring.
I need to get rid of the old hen house (which was our old converted garden shed!) As it has deteriorated in our bad English weather and is no longer...
Thanks for your lovely messages.
Neither myself or my neighbours have seen the fox, just the evidence it left, and where I live in England we don't keep guns or anything like that!
It would be easy to hate the fox, but it's an animal too, and we think it has young to feed, she was simply...
