This is a GOOD thing. It's kinda creepy, though. Our four RIR hens finally started laying about a month ago, and now, in the middle of winter, we are getting 3-4 eggs per day. We got FIVE FREAKING EGGS yesterday. From FOUR chickens. Are all RIRs this productive?!

Must be something in the water

I'm pretty sure hens are only suppose to lay one a day... however, I know how you feel. I have a Cuckoo Marans hen that lays consistently everyday. And I swear that I'll go out some days and find 2 of her little dark eggs in with all the others. Yes, I collect everyday. Her eggs tend to be a bit smaller than the others, so I think it's possible that my hen and yours could be laying more than one a day. Why not?

RIR are known as being great producers though.

It must be a Feb. thing. I checked on my 4 hens last night at 9:00 pm. Today at 5:00 pm there were 5 eggs in the nests. I said what the???. I checked to see if I had a stow away, but there was no new chickie. Also yesterday, I got a double yolker from one of my girls who has been laying for about a month, as well as a fart egg from my sultan bantam. I think the weather has them all discombobulated or something. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

It has to be a feb thing.. lol all of the sudden i got 17 eggs today instead of the normal amount of 9 for the winter times. That has to be a sign its goona warm up! And i have gotten 2 double yolkers from the same hen today and yesterday!

my little porcelain d'uccle bantam will skip a few days and then lay 2 eggs in one day.

I have had the same thing a few times. Some of my birds, I believe, layed early in the morning then again in the evening or instead of laying a double yoke, layed two. I know because I too had an extra egg a few times. Everyone had layed an egg those days and when I went out in the evenings to check on them, I always check out the nest boxes in the evenings, and there was an extra egg, so I believe it can happen but is rare. Also double yokes are more common when pullets first start to lay.

Fart egg: A chicken mis-fire. Sometimes has no yolk, or no whites. Usually super small.
