It was Mothers Day in Australia on Sunday.. And look what happened in my hen house . I've counted at least 10 under there, she was sitting on 15 , I'll find out tomorrow how many actually hatched lol
Thanks, yeh I just put them in a mini coop, I was worried as the mum is pretty much on the bottom of the pecking order, although she put up a great fight while I caught her
So the one that was in half a cracked shell came out with splayed legs. Easy fixed though with a piece of drinking straw and a rubber band
So I have 6 hatched so far, one more hatching and other eggs rocking. This hatch has amazed the bajeezus out of me
It really is amazing. I had 3 more hatch over night, one is hatching now.. With its foot hanging half out the shell, weirdest way to hatch EVER, and another one pipping
Ok, so this goes against anything I've ever researched BUT... Yesterday, believing they were dead in the shell, I cracked one, finding another live chicken, I carefully peeled away the top half of the shell, rupturing blood vessels etc. I said to my daughter, who was watching on in horror "this...
Thanks guys, you have made me feel better, I've always had very successful hatches so this one is leaving me quite concerned. More eggs are moving now so that is also a positive sign. But I just got home and the incubator is in the shed and the temperature was up to 39.8 because the outside...
Warning, this may be graphic!!! I'm going to post a photo of a chick that I thought had died inside the shell, as the broody hem got off on day 18/19 and when I found them they were stone cold, I waited a little while longer thinking she knew what she was doing but she was done, so I cracked...
I going through the same thing, my hen went broody for 19 days only and got off them. When I went to check, the eggs were stone cold so I put them in the incubator, today is day 21, I've seen some moving but no signs of pipping. Good luck and keep us posted, I also need some hope at the moment :)
so we have a bit of a heat wave at the moment, today was 37 degrees Celsius and tomorrow is going to be 40. I have 19 eggs under a broody that should hatch in 5 days. I was concerned about them becoming "overcooked" because the outside temperature is so extreme for this time of year, but she is...
can someone tell me how long a roosters sperm can remain active inside a hen. I got rid of my Sussex and Plymouth Rock rooster about 6 months ago. I then only had a golden laced Wyandotte rooster, I then incubated these little beauties, all crossed with an Isa Brown, but clearly there is 1 young...
Ok, so I know how it happened now. I have another (bigger Sussex hen) that wants her nesting box to lay her eggs in, so she has been pushing her out daily to lay an egg . Today would have been hatching day but obviously no chicks . But you never know, if she stays on there another week there may...
Yeh first time broody, and I had t collected the eggs for a few days, I originally thought she was only sitting on about 10 but when she got off I counted 19 , she was covering them all fine, she is quite a big Sussex hen that I hatched successfully in my bator last year. I am putting it down to...
my Sussex hen went broody a week ago, she was sitting on a whopping 19 eggs, 2 days ago she switched beating boxes and is sitting on 4. Why would she do that? I'm a bit sad about it
