When I called the animal control office, the officer was insistent that the roosters were heard in my backyard, just as I insisted we don’t keep roosters. I am just really frustrated and worried and I feel like my girls and the specimens (silkies) are at risk.
It felt like nothing short of me...
Someone has apparently called the city on “my” roosters (we don’t have any!). Meanwhile the neighbor’s multiple roosters continue to crow. I just can’t deal with this now — there is a huge amount else going on as well, so I’ve decided it’s time to just find them new homes. I’ve posted in the...
Today was the day that just made me say “enough”. Someone called the city to complain about our roosters — and we don’t keep any!! I don’t want to rat out the people who do, but I also don’t want to be a target because I keep hens. (One of our silkie chicks is starting to look rather manly IMO...
What I’m most concerned about (and please forgive if this repeats someone) is that human off-label consumption of ivermectin is going to get it pulled from shelves everywhere. Then it would be unavailable — or very difficult to get — for our fur/feather babies.
My local Costco has 40# boxes of chicken thighs for as low as 60c per pound. Not only is it cheap, but somebody else did the dirty work. On the other hand, the boxed stuff never waddles up to us for lap cuddles. Turns out that was enough to convince the whole family to get more meaties this...
Finding the best balance of your comfort and the bird’s can be a trick at first.
If you don’t achieve instant death with the head crush, you may be dealing with a very difficult situation dispatching a gruesomely injured bird. To me, decapitation gives the guarantee the bird is always gone...
...fed and cared for, but not tamed. Some strangely still grow that social on their own and we have to be VERY conscious of where those little idiots* are every second anyone is in the pen.
Lesson learned: Quail are little birdies with little birdy brains. We can’t expect them to analyze...
For the first few weeks, yes. But even with the blend they get huge fast. I switched to the blend at 4 weeks when I saw their weight was probably going to surpass their age. Most of them were gaining a pound per week.
84c per bird, pick up in store. I am soooo jealous.

Guess I should explain — I always try to make them feel comfortable and loved til the last possible moment. If I don’t like a bird, I may not be giving it that easy send-off. It’s just a weird thing that bugs me.
We usually raise coturnix quail for meat, but too many were turning into permanent pets. Also my kiddo doesn’t love the taste as much as I do. So I just gave up for now. But nothing beats 2 month turnaround from egg to table IMO.
So the family favorite is CX. Just the right blend of cute...
