    egg quality gone down lately

We have lots of gravel where they are kept. I figured that that would be fine for grit. Do they need store bought insoluble grit as well? Maybe I will try some probiotics too. It has been hot but they are in constant shade and I have not had issues in the past two years with the watery albumen...

    egg quality gone down lately

Usually, with the exception of one of my girls, I get nice eggs. Firm yolks, good consistency, nice hard shells. Lately they are not as good. shells appear fine, if lighter in color, but are slightly more brittle. When I crack them open they seem less firm, the yolks tend to break, the "white"...

Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Rachel I too am curious about the sex of your chick. One of mine seems to be feathering out similar to yours. Only mine I dont think will have white spots on the wings. Mine is at the bottom of page 512, does the lighter one resemble yours at that age?

Def over 2 weeks, they had been at the feed store for at least 2 1/2 to 3 weeks when I got them. Will post more pics tomorrow, the chests and backs are starting to feather now. Taking pics is hard with these as they are so skittish! I have been trying to feed them out of my hand and gently get...

EE colouring / plumage - chicks vs/ adults --- Post your PICS!

I picked up 2EE and a GLW at the feed store the other day. They are 3-4 weeks old. Curious to see what the one EE especially turns out like. She (I hope) is getting more and more white feathers on her breast. The brownish one hasnt changed much at all. Will post more pics as they grow!

    Hoop House Size

I am no expert, but if you will have a coop, and this will be the run, Id say 5-8. Especially if you are moving it each day they will not do too much damage to the ground. A lot depends on the size coop you will have too.

    hoop coop ideas in MD

I live in Southern Maryland, with my 3 hens (getting 2-3 more soon) where we get a wide range of weather. For example it was 70degrees here yesterday and 25 today, but lower if you factor wind chill! i am thinking of building a hoop coop very similar to...

    Chicks of different ages

I am going to get 3-5 chicks from our local farm store. They have a couple of the breeds that I want now. and will have the others in a couple weeks. Should I try as hard as possible to get them all the same age, or will a week or two make a big difference? The last batch of 4 I got were 4 weeks...

    Open air coop??

A while back I posted a pic of my parent's old coop behind out horse barn and was told it was an open air type coop. Most of the front of it is wire. The coop has been unused for 20 years other than for storage. I am seriously thinking of tearing all down but the bones and making it a usable...

Hen found dead, no apparent reason

So I'm sure I dont have enough information to give to get any help. But at least wanted to get some ideas and share my story. I had 4 hens approx 2 yrs old. Went out to feed them one evening and noticed that my black austrolorp was not out in the run with the others. I found her laying under the...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

My MotherInLaw feels the same about fresh eggs! "Eww I cant eat those, they are gross!" Cause they come out of the chicken's butt...We have had many discussions that always go the same.... very similar to the first post. I tried to tell her they are better, fresher, etc. We have been banned from...

Favorite chicken not laying or laying eggs with no shell

One of the eggs I found was just an egg and white, then I saw the chickens running around with a super thin paper shell fighting over it. I guess it looked foreign to them so they ate it. Scared me thinking they might start pecking/eating eggs, but they havent.

Favorite chicken not laying or laying eggs with no shell

I have had my chickens for over a year now and they have been laying for about 10 months. Was getting 4 eggs a day from 4 hens for a while, then they molted and stopped laying, then started again but it was winter so production slowed a tiny bit, still got on average 3 eggs a day. Sometimes...
