I have 2 really good farm dogs. One is a chaser, which works great for a fox. The other likes to kill, but is not fast enough to catch a fox. It is very hard to trap a fox. I got 1 in 20 years of trapping!
I hatched 50 dual chicks last weekend and bought 25 Cornish cross meat chicks that came Thursday. Can I raise them in the same brooder? I know feed needs to come out at night for the meat chicks, but will that matter for the duals?
I just moved 25 yesterday under the 2 lamps (they are 250 watt). They made it thru the night without a problem, but tonight is the really cold night. I'll pickup a couple more heat lamps today! Thanks for the help!!
My chicks (50) hatched last weekend. I usually move them to the barn brooder after a week. This weekend thru next week they are calling for temps below 10 degrees. Will 2 heat lamps keep them warm enough?
I have no neighbors, so mine can't be human and there is no chance a dog could have done it. It could be possum or coon. I usually keep poison out for the rats, but have not checked my bait boxes lately. I'll do that this weekend.
They are not in the bedding, as there is no bedding. It is a chicken building, but my chickens are free range and not locked up. I had not thought about a coon, but wondered about a pack rat. Anybody had a rat issue? It is too cold here for snakes!
I have 5 laying boxes in the back chicken building. Four of the boxes had one ceramic egg in them. They were gone today. My chickens are free range and are never locked up, but do roost around the building. What would have taken them?
Mixed breed hens mostly, Easter Eggers, Orphington, Wyandotte and Welsummer. The incubator was 99 to 101 temps with a fan. But I did have to double stack a few eggs as the turner holds 42.
I was out of town for 6 days, returning on September 18th. I gathered the 50 eggs and decided to try my new incubator. They were due for lockdown on October 6th, hatch on the 9th.
So far 4 hatched Monday (I pulled the turner at that time), 2 yesterday and 3 more are hatching this morning...
I used a Hovabator for years and it finally died. It was amazing. I purchased the one like you are looking, but it is a single. I have only done one hatch in it, but had a tough time keeping them temps constant. I finally wrapped it with towels, which helped.
I used the bait boxes and put them in places that are away from the other animals. I have chickens, rabbits, dogs, cats and horses. It usually takes a couple weeks, but the rats are found dead. They can kill a good sized chick!
