We have three hens, two light brahmas and one bantam. They lay between 1 - 3 eggs per day. They are in a coop most of the weekday, out for a couple of hours each afternoon and all day Saturday/Sunday. They get along, their water is changed daily and they are eating well - organic layer, bugs...
Our small flock free ranges the yard for at least a few hours each day. They are fed a consistent, organic grower mix with no corn and no soy. They get a "treat" almost every day - BOSS, oatmeal, eggs, greens, vegetable scraps are the norm.
Their droppings are fairly consistent in color and...
We had a big party last night - lots of pumpkin carving, bobbing for apples. The chickens have spent the day running around the yard eating everything that dropped to the ground. Now they are napping in the sun. Chicken heaven!
Am I the only one who thinks feeding chicken to chickens is strange? I can't bring myself to do it . . . and my boyfriend gets freaked out when I feed them scrambled eggs (which I can totally justify).
My girls love pumpkin guts, but only if they are removed from the pumpkin entirely. They won't touch the pumpkin with a ten foot pole. In fact, they seem to like the pumpkin guts the best if I microwave them for a minute or so to partially cook them.
Great! My Light Brahmas and Black Australorp are about 15 weeks old and my Black Shamo is slightly older. I won a $100 gift certificate to an on-line chicken store and have ordered grit, dried meal worms and some other items I needed. It should arrive Monday or Tuesday.
I have noticed more...
I'm fairly new to the chicken game and would love it if experienced flock tenders could "rate" my chicken's diet. I want to make sure I'm doing right by them.
We have 3 pullets and 1 cockerel. They are in the coop/run overnight and most of the week day. They free range a medium - large...
I'm really new to chickens . . .
I took the advice of some trusted long-time chicken owners. Unfortunately, nobody every mentioned a "quarantine" and it's not mentioned in my one chicken book. That said, the previous owner of my bird has been highly recommended by several local organizations...
Thanks a lot . . . I introduced her to the flock immediately after bringing her home. There was a brief skirmish between her and my Australorp roo - my hens ran in the other direction. They pretty much avoided her for the rest of the day. When I put them to bed at night on the roost, she...
Though I went out for a Barred Rock or a Buff Brahma today I returned home with a Black Shamo. She's healthy and sweet . . .
I can't find much information on them. Anyone out there own one or a dozen? I'd love to know more about their personalities, laying behavior, etc.
She has been...
I planned to add a Barred Rock or Buff Brahma to my flock this weekend. Came home with a Black Shamo . . . she was too sweet to pass up. She's a healthy, beautiful girl and I can't wait to introduce her to the others (fingers crossed). I had never heard of the Shamo before today - am told...
Our afternoon photoshoot didn't go quite like I had planned . . . I could only manage three pictures of them together. Of our three chicks purchased on June 26, one (Black Australorp) is quite obviously a cockerel. The Light Brahmas seem "hen like", but then I'm new to this whole chicken thing...
My girls just discovered diced up tomatoes. Now all I have to do is yell "tomatoes" and they'll come running from anywhere in the yard . . . it's the PERFECT way to get them in at night!
