Kids can be so gross! Are yours?

When I was around 5 my little sister was potty training, and the one bathroom we had was ALWAYS occupied when I needed it. So one day my 5 year old logic kicked in and I noticed that the cusions on the couch lift up just like a toilet seat. For a week or so the family dog was getting punished...

Looking to move 1,600 miles across country and take 32 chickens...

The move might happen this summer, just waiting to sell our home here in CO. I'm just doing all the pre planning I can do for this move. When we do move I'll post an update. The coop is a smaller temporary coop for sick or young chickens. It's like 5' x 8'.

Looking to move 1,600 miles across country and take 32 chickens...

It's a 24 hour drive, and we'll just truck straight through. I thought that water only might be good on occasion so they don't get upset stomachs. That's what we do with the dogs and they do fine.

Looking to move 1,600 miles across country and take 32 chickens...

The coop is going to go with us, so I thought I would "kill two birds with one stone", um pardon the phrase!

Looking to move 1,600 miles across country and take 32 chickens...

We are planning to move from Colorado to West Virginia, it's closer to our family and MUCH cheaper. We have a flock of 32 birds all are a year and younger. The original plan is to put our smaller coop on the flatbed and let the birds ride in the there. I was thinking of sectioning it off so...

    week old chick died

I know that they just die sometimes, but it was a bit wierd that we bought 4 more chicks so that it wouldn't be alone, and then it dies. Well, at least I got some barred rocks that I wanted.

    week old chick died

Hello, I had hatched a chick a week ago. It was the only one that hatched, but it was healthy. I had two chicks that I hatched 3 1/2 weeks earlier, but they were WAY too big to put that little chick in with them. So we decided to get our lonely chick a couple from our local feed store as...

    Very bad hatching rate!

Strange thing, this morning I checked my hydrometer calibration. After 15 hours in the salt method it read 70%. I came home for lunch today and after 20 hours it's reading 66%. Hmmm.

    Very bad hatching rate!

I calibrated my hydrometer using the salt method and it is reading 5% low. So now I'm confused. My egg autopsies revealed that none of the developed chicks broke the airsack, which sort of rules out the "drowning" idea. Also, the membranes seemed to be rubbery and the chick seemed to be...

    Very bad hatching rate!

Quote: what is your altitude? I am at 6800 ft here in NM and having chatted with one of the top silkie breeders in the world, who happens to live not far from me, he assured me that at this altitude it's not always easy to come out with a good hatch. There are times when getting anything to...

    Very bad hatching rate!

Quote: Actually the membrane was more rubbery. In fact the second chick from the first hatch I had to help because it was clearly stuck to the membrane, and stuck it was. It's fine & healthy now, and is even bigger than it's older sibling. I waited until day 24 on the first hatch. The...

    Very bad hatching rate!

Quote: I hatched them on their side. I did an egtopsy on all the eggs. The first hatch had four completely formed chicks that didn't make it. The second hatch had one chick that was completely formed, one that must have quite around day 17 (this egg was a small one), and one that seemed...

    Very bad hatching rate!

I gathered the eggs for my second hatch about 7 days before they went in the bator, as the first hatch was finishing up. They sat on the counter where the temp was 60-71. I suspect that next time I should keep them cooler?

    Very bad hatching rate!

Oh, and the eggs are from my own flock. They just turned 1 year old last week.

    Very bad hatching rate!

I have 6 air holes that were opened the entire time. I also kept my humidity around 30-40 the first 18 days and then bumped it up for lockdown. No, I didn't calibrate my hydrometer. It's a little digital thermo/hydrometer. My temp swing was 100.8 - 97.8. It only stayed at either of those...

    Very bad hatching rate!

Hello, I have just finished my second hatch. Out of 9 eggs, I lost four to blood rings, one was clear, and three developed but died during lockdown. Only one little trooper survived. I started this hatch directly afer my first hatch. That one produced two chicks out of 9 eggs. Two were lost...

We got a pip on the end of day 19 I believe. It's more on towards the bottom end of the egg, hopefully it hatches.
