    Marek’s?

She has not laid eggs since November. Her comb is red, but I think she is done with that part of her life. No roosters. I have only three girls left from my original flock of 8. None of them are laying, but the other two are doing fine. The one with troubles was fine the day prior to exhibiting...

    Marek’s?

My 4 year old production blue has been listing to one side and now can only get around by scooting. She will eat but is increasingly less mobile. Her leg looks fine but something is clearly wrong. Because she id a hybrid, she is elderly at this age. Is she too old for Marek’s disease?

    Winter molts

That's encouraging. They all seem to be doing fine...even the molter. I'm finally seeing the pin feathers and hope she's starting to grow the darn things back.

    Winter molts

Yes, when I witness it I firmly move the culprit away with a loud “no”. I have noticed that she was only pulling a feather that was sticking out in an odd way (probably it was starting to fall out). The molter girl had to deal with 1degree F this morning.

    Winter molts

It is late January, temps in the teens, and one of my girls - 11 months old - started her first molt. Ugh! This is our third pullet to molt, but the timing of this one couldn’t be worse. I’m concerned that the feather loss might be due to something else. She isn’t bullied, but I noticed that my...

while holding a chicken on my Lap

One of mine purrs when I pet her while she’s resting on my lap. They make a similar sound when they want to alert the flock of a possible danger. Their behavior lets you know which is which. When she is calm with closed eyes, I know it’s a sign of contentment. This particular girl also purrs...

Official BYC Poll: Do You Feed Your Chickens Cicadas?

We went through the 17 year onslaught and my girls couldn’t have been happier. They’d only eat live ones. I’m sure they miss these treats. We have the regular sounds of the yearly summer cicadas, but we seldom see them.

I have sketchers slip-ons. Too much toe-pecking with my flip-flops.

2 shelless eggs in 10 minutes

Early in our pullets’ egg laying life (beginning of June), one of my Amberlinks ”dropped” a shelless egg during their early evening foraging. Several days later, she did this again. She’d stand as still as a statue…then plop. We grabbed the egg to keep the girls from feasting on it. After that...

Limping 4 month old pullet and bloodshot eyes

Called them, they weren’t vaccinated. You have to request it. We did lots of research as novices, but somehow missed this. Ugh!

Limping 4 month old pullet and bloodshot eyes

The other eye looks a little “bloodshot” but not as bad. We tended to her left foot yesterday thinking bumblefoot, but today she is walking on her toes of her right foot. I can tell she is in pain. Unless Mt. Healthy Hatcheries vaccinated our girls right after hatching, then she hasn’t been...

Limping 4 month old pullet and bloodshot eyes

We noticed one of our sweet girls limping last night during their early evening foraging. Today it was worse. She still eats and drinks, but sits more frequently than usual. We couldn’t tell if it was bumblefoot, but we soaked her foot in epsom salt water, applied antibiotics and wrapped her...
